Kusasenri Coffee Roastery is a modern, minimalist café located right next to the Kusasenri grasslands in Aso. It’s a serene spot surrounded by wide-open plains with panoramic views of Mount Nakadake and grazing horses in the distance. The interior features clean lines, concrete accents, and large windows that let the landscape take center stage. There’s also outdoor terrace seating that lets you enjoy the view with fresh mountain air.
The café is operated under the supervision of Coffee Gallery from Kumamoto City and uses high-end equipment, including the rare Kees van der Westen Slim Jim espresso machine. Beans are roasted on-site, ensuring fresh and high-quality brews.
Popular drink choices include drip coffee, espresso, matcha latte, milk-brew, strawberry nectar, and their standout charcoal latte. Prices are typically between ¥500 to ¥650. Visitors often highlight the creamy texture of the matcha latte and the aromatic profile of the charcoal latte. Many also mention that the taste of the drinks is elevated by the incredible natural backdrop.
The roastery opens from 10 AM to 5 PM daily, with last orders around 4:30 PM. It’s located at 2391-15 Nagakusa, Aso, Kumamoto 869-2231. As there’s no convenient public transport, it’s best accessed by car. Paid parking is available on-site. The café accepts various payment methods including credit cards, Suica, and mobile payment apps like PayPay.
The main advantages of this café are its world-class coffee, unbeatable views, and tranquil atmosphere. The only downsides are that it can get crowded during peak hours, and ordering is done through QR code only, which might be slightly inconvenient for some.

I ordered the Milk-brew and charcoal latte, ~500-600 yen (3USD) each. They are both great. The Milk-brew tastes special! It’s like the light-coffee taste milk, smooth and finely flavored. The charcoal latte comes with a nice latte art (even mine is a bit off the center)They uses Aso milk and selected beans
The only thing I don’t like that much, but not a real big thing, is that you have to access the menu through QR code, while the whole shop is in good design… just next to the volcano tourist attraction! Why not a nice, natural physical menu...

We ordered the milk brew, charcoal latte, and Kumamoto OJ. The milk brew has a much lighter coffee taste compared to the charcoal.
