カフェ･ド･ノエル — Restaurant in Mitsuke

This café may look charming online, but my experience as a foreign visitor was extremely uncomfortable – and frankly, discriminatory.

The owner made no effort to communicate, even after I showed her my translated order. She kept responding in Japanese, even though it was clear I didn’t understand. She acted annoyed by my presence from the beginning.

What made it worse was the moment two Japanese customers entered – suddenly she became warm and welcoming, smiling and chatting with them. The contrast couldn’t have been more obvious.

Later, when I politely asked (via translation) if I could stay a bit longer while waiting for someone, she rejected me bluntly without explanation – even though the café was nearly empty. She then suddenly spoke in English, which she had pretended not to understand earlier – just to demand payment in cash.

The way she treated me compared to Japanese guests was not just rude – it felt clearly xenophobic. I’ve traveled across Japan and rarely encountered something this hostile.

Unfriendly and Unwelcoming – Not Foreign-Friendly

I visited this café hoping for a quiet place to enjoy a coffee and maybe do a bit of reading. As a foreign guest, I was treated coldly from the start. The owner refused to communicate in any language but Japanese, even though I tried to ask basic questions using translation apps.

When I politely asked if I could stay a little longer, I was immediately told “No” – without reason and in a very rude manner, even though the place was empty.
