One of the most memorable meal I had on this road trip in Japan with my family.
Iroribo is a few minutes walk from our airbnb in Numazu on the Izu peninsula. We asked our Airbnb host to help us reserve, and it turned out they’re friend are friends with the owner of the restaurant.
They greeted us with ‘Sawasdee krub’ since they knew we were from Thailand. And as my family and I sat down around a large table with burning charcoal pits, the chef came out to put Aji fish on the grill. Before the Aji was cooked, Aji and Isaki sashimi, freshly caught by the chef this morning, was served alongside this wonderful tofu and seaweed salad.
Then, sliced pork with miso, mushroom, and walnut on top of aromatic Hoba lead was placed on the other pit, slowly cooking and radiating salivating fragrance.
As the pork was cooking, soy sauce braised isaki was served. Perfectly cooked; it was delicate and succulent.
Then there was the tempura; the highlight for me was the lotus root. Crunchy, crispy, and aromatic.
The real show stopper, though, was the fried Amadai whose flesh was so succulent, contrasting its delicate but crunchy scale. I added a sprinkle of salt and ate it with a bite of steamy, starchy rice, and there was a party in my mouth!
We eased down towards the end of our journey with Isaki’s shirako (sperm sacs). I’m usually not a fan of Shirako but I must say this was a very pleasant experience. They were deep fried, and their texture felt like silken tofu.
We ended the meal with steamed clams and sazae (which the chef nearly forgot 😂). By that time, we could barely eat any more.
Oh, another hidden gem was the fresh yuzu sour. A must!
I don’t think any of us ever got a chance to put our chopsticks down during the whole meal!
Thank you so much for a wonderful dinner and heartwarming...
