In summary: The environment was no better than a family diner. In fact, I don't quite remember having such a night at any diner in Japan. I regret choosing this restaurant for my wedding anniversary dinner. Devastingly disappointed. In fact, I refused to hand over my gift to my wife at dinner as it would have been just too lackluster and lacking any romance.
Avoid like the plague for anything romantic.
The good: the food itself is fairly good. Which was the saving grace of the night.
The bad:
Directly an issue of the restaurant:
The staff had no idea what they were serving. The waitress laid down the main dish in front of me and followed up with this astoundingly elucidating information, verbatim for your reading pleasure: "This [sic] main dish".
I speak both Japanese and English. It didn't get better in Japanese either. In fact, I think we were mistaken for Chinese diners (a wonder since we were speaking in Japanese and English). But I never heard a string of words in any language longer than 3 words the entire night from the wait staff.
In directly an issue of the restaurant:
Families were waiting in line in front of restaurant and the children who were busy screaming and running about had me convinced that the restaurant moonlighted as a kindergarten.
Furthermore another child directly next to the table across us was busy watching obnoxiously loud cat videos. I waited in vain to have the staff intervene but I suppose that's just part for the course.
Words cannot express fully my disgust at...
Read moreHad a great server who took us to our table and served us wine and first course. He gave us thorough introduction of the dish and thoughtful recommendations. After that the young gentlemen who served us refused to introduce each courses and pretends he doesn't speak English. Only until I queried about one missing course, which later turns out to be served in wrong order, he then starts to introduce the dishes he served. But it was already 3,4 dishes into the dinner and we have already missed introduction to the majority of them. Food wise, two of the dishes stood out for me, one with chestnuts and one with fish. Overall dining experience was mediocre. The experience would be a better match of the price if the level of service...
It was a tourist area price, but it was delicious and the service was good. It is a restaurant with a glass wall that overlooks Lake Toya and is based on red. Amuse, appetizer, fish, meat, dessert, cafe, abalone and cheese can be added as an option. Cod bread crumbs were perfect for the texture of crispy bread crumbs, the moistness of the cod, and the richness of the butter sauce. The wagyu beef is well cooked, tender and juicy. It goes very well with the mountain wasabi that comes with it, and it washes away the oiliness of the meat. The dessert was a hard mango pudding, pineapple sorbet, crumble and raspberry chocolate, and it was a fun dessert with various textures, sweetness, sourness, and melting...
