Sushi Ya — Restaurant in Yamanouchi

Pretty cozy space, and I walked in a bit before 5:30 pm. The chef speaks a bit of english and was running the show till another employee showed up. They gave me an english menu and I chose the 10 pieces chef's choice and then the soup. It was honestly one of the best sushi I had in Japan. Thigns were fresh, and he gave a very nice variety. Chanced upon this gem during my last family trip in Dec 2023. The produce was fresh and expertly prepared, and as good as some of the Michelin* we had. It was such a hearty experience we came back the second time.

You can go off menu, and request for “special items” - fresh produce that the boss will and can find that morning. Our special was Nodoguro, which is more accessible towards Ishikawa.

Reservations are a must. Had dinner for 3 here in Dec 2024 and was seated in a private tatami room and restaurant was full house. There was an English menu and we ordered chef's sushi set, superfine sushi set, uni sashimi, sashimi platter, negitoro handroll and miso soup. Everything was wonderful and on point.

Food and price point was deserving of 5 stars. However, 1 star is deducted due to slower service as the chef cum owner is the only 1 running the restaurant.
