Update 16/6/25: score increased to 5 stars to reflect continued excellent standards in taste, cleanliness and exceptional value. After my bitter experience in Yum Cha House where I was bombed RM25 for a plate of dim sum, I realise I've been taking Wah Taste for granted. They deserve special mention for capping the most expensive plate at RM8.50. Extremely rare in this day and age.
Look. It's about time I updated my first foodie review.
My area has a few dim sum places to choose from. From the pioneer Botani Dim Sum to the franchised Dim Sum Paradise. Both are fully air-conditioned and prices lean on the higher side. Never fear. Wah Taste is the most casual one of all, located at a busy corner shoplot and semi-open air. Al fresco breakfasting.
On weekends the crowd spills into the corridor and there's a line to get in. They've been at this for a few years, so you can't question their staying power and appeal. I am charmed by its casual atmosphere and good variety of dim sum to choose from, including some mega-sized ones.
The dim sum are large-portioned, seasoned well, and not overly salty. There are flourishes of creativity with some new items now and again, and they spice up their meat paste with water chestnuts, mushrooms etc so it won't be boring. The siew mai has good mouthfeel, while prawns are springy and fresh too. Personally I love the prawn siew mai and scallop mai bcos I like big bites lol.
Nowadays, when people from afar ask me which is the best dim sum in Ipoh, I still point them towards the usual suspects ie the tourist spots (Chooi Yue, Foh San lol). Most locals have retreated to their own neughbourhoods and are contented with what's on offer nearby.
Wah Taste fits the criteria perfectly. Good food, not among the best in the city, but definitely good enough, but even better is the more relaxed pace. I'd hesitate to recommend anyone who drove 3 hours to come here. But if you happen to be around, this is a great...
Read moreAbsolute blown away by their service. So often, these establishments have no time to patiently hear your orders out, let alone entertain your questions and queries. The staff here were very different that way. They were warm and accommodating and very helpful with their suggestions. Service came with a smile always. What's more, when we sent our milo ais back because we wanted it richer and with more milk, they gave us a free drink to compensate for it. Food was fresh, tasty and portions were good. Price is definitely bang for buck too. 5/5...
Read moreOne of the best foodie find around. Dimsum is nice; the meat, prawn tasted fresh. The deep fried dimsum is crunchy. wu-kok filled with taro taste, prefer more fillings though. The egg tart is my least fav, tasted bit bland. The service is 6 star. On a public holiday, all the staff were so accommodating, trying hard to find us seats. N pay attention to even simple drink orders. All this with smiles n constant reminder tat they didn't forget our orders. Open air restaurant , certain seats get bit hit when...
