Ordered Siam Laksa (Laksa Lemak), Assam Laksa, Popiah, and freshly squeezed nutmeg juice. Both types of laksa had a strong fish aroma as soon as they were served. The Siam Laksa is the must try dish in this shop. It can be said to be one of the best Siam laksa in Penang (5 Star because of this dish). Its soup is incredibly rich, with the fragrance of coconut milk standing out. When you eat the noodles with the soup, the noodles are enveloped in the fragrant coconut milk flavour, combined with the freshness of the fish, creating a perfectly balanced taste without feeling overly rich.
The Assam Laksa was decent, quite standard, above average. The soup has the sour flavor of assam, with a hint of sweetness and mild spiciness. For those who like prawn paste, the shop provides it on the side, allowing you to add it to your taste. The prawn paste flavor enhances the overall depth and complexity of the soup.
The Popiah, however, was quite disappointing. Perhaps the shop had pre-fried it too early before serving, so the skin wasn't crispy. The filling was also lacking and overly salty. Even dipping it into the laksa soup didnât mask the strong salty flavor.
Nutmeg juice, of course, is a must-try drink when eating in Balik Pulau. It tasted great, sour, and refreshing. Pairing it with laksa was simply perfect. However, judging from its color, it seemed like it had been squeezed some time ago (as freshly squeezed nutmeg juice should be whiter, though itâs also possible that assam was added, altering the colour, corrections are welcome). That said, it depends on personal preferences, as some people might find the astringent taste a...
Read moreI was looking forward to this Balik Pulau laksa. The last time I had it, they were still in the town area. We had to wait for about 10 minutes before a table was available. While the shop was clean, they had just 8 tables. I found out that the fried kuay teow was holding the patrons up. The laksa was quick. I ordered both the mixed gravy (sour and lemak) laksa, and lemak laksa, fried kuay teow, some spring rolls, and a warm nutmeg drink. The best-tasting dish was the mixed gravy laksa. Still is wasn't what I had envisaged on my last visit. It was not as tasty as I thought. The ingredients were sparse. The Siam laksa was a tad salty for me. The fried kuay teow lacked its "wok hei." The sausage was under-fried. The spring roll was crunchy with only mengkuang (jicama) inside. The nutmeg drink was room temperature and not warm at all. It was from a bottle and lack the flavor of nutmeg. Overall, it was not a wonderful outing. The 45-minute drive along the winding road was not worth it. It could be a bad day but it is not a place worthy of another...
Read moreSuppose to open shop at 10AM but the business owner only showed up themselves and slowly slided up the gate at 10.20AM and just let customer waited outside. Only 4 tables inside, each table with 3 chairs, and the staffs (at least 5) were kelam kabut serving 3 tables with total of 6 pax. I see the business owner's attitude is a problem, they don't see failing punctuality is an issue, even the neighbour jokingly said, 'hey your customers are waiting for you to open shop!' and yet the shop owner weren't even bothered. Taste wise, siam laksa is okay, RM5.50 each small bowl that can be finished in less than 10 sips, i don't think the price is decent and reasonable. I see many other reviews commented about the shop owner's terrible behaviour, honestly i didn't encounter but I don't think people would slander a business' reputation without a...
