As a peranakan born and raised in Malacca, I'm fussy about nyonya kueh. Finding good ones is a hit-and-miss affair, with far more misses than hits. It's hard to find kueh that has the appearance, taste, and quality that I rate highly. I only recently decided to give Dapur Cho Cho a try, and I'm happy I did so. We tried several types of kueh and they're generally authentic and well-made. But to me, the onde onde is the must-eat. The rice flour dough is not too thick and the gula melaka filling is all liquid. The grated coconut coating the balls is fresh. My wife is always game for apam balik and she likes the one sold here. The pulut tekan is soft and has the right levels of lemak and saltiness. Its pretty streaks of blue from the bunga telang tell me that the kueh is made with pride and care. I didn't quite fancy the kaya that came with the pulut tekan because it's not sweet and eggy enough. That's a personal preference, of course, based on what I grew up eating.
