Mini Cameron Highlands Series - Part 5
It definitely worth the drive here!
Most of us will only go to big towns such as Brinchang and Tanah Rata in search for food and often overlook those in smaller ones slightly further away. I've tasted better food in Kg Raja and now I can add Tringkap to the list. Located about 9km from Brinchang town centre (and nearer to BOH Tea Centre which I visited earlier), I made a plan to make slight detour to taste food at this restaurant not visible from the main road.
Unmistakably a traditional Chinese restaurant, I had already made up my mind on 3 dishes (the first 3 that I listed out) that I wanted to try. It took a while for them to prepare the dishes but it was worth the wait.
◾Steamed kampung chicken - first of their signature dishes. This is what the Cantonese would say "Pak suit suit, wat luit luit". The fowl was steamed nicely although plating could do better. Drizzled with fried garlic oil with ginger dipping sauce on the side, all of us like the dish. ◾Deep fried sliced tilapia - what they did was to slice the fish leaving just the head, tail and bones before deep fried everything. Gotta love the crispiness of the fish slices tossed with salt & pepper plus curry leaves. Served with pickled mango salad (or was it papaya?) To cut of the greasiness. I love this to the max. ◾deep fried oyster mushroom - this dish was almost my details order everytime I go to Cameron Highlands. ◾stir fried vegetable with belacan - quite delicious ◾stir fried long bean.
Reason to come is definitely for the chicken and fish! The flavour of the fish was quite unique and not commonly found outside. After the hearty lunch, we headed back to the hotel, checked out and left Cameron...

Read moreArrived just after 7pm. Ordered their specialties like Kampung Chicken, deep fried tilapia and stir fried water cress. Total damage for 3 came up to RM 104.
The chicken was very tender and the ginger dip went miles to accentuate an already very tasty dish. Bring Kampung chicken, the chicken skin was more crunchy and the meat more lean but in no way sinewy or hard to chew.
The tilapia fish was sliced and then deep fried. It was so crispy, literally the entire fish could be eaten. The accompanying acar being tangy and sweet countered the saltiness of the fish. Fantastic.
Last but not least the stir fried water cress retained its crunchiness and unlike other fried vegetables, the leaves were still emerald green even at the end of the meal.
Bonus points: they use double layer mugs to insulate and retain the temperature of the drink. And lady boss was very friendly, not what we would expect from reading some of the comments. She actually came over twice to speak with us and enquirer...
