Madras Mess Ipoh is truly a place where every food lover must discover. Located in the heart of Jelapang, Ipoh this unassuming eatery transports you straight to South India with its vibrant aromas and authentic dishes. As soon as you walk in, you're greeted by the warm, homely atmosphere that sets the tone for a culinary journey like no other.

The food here is nothing short of spectacular. Whether you're a fan of vegetarian or non-vegetarian dishes, there’s something for everyone. One of the stars of the menu is their mutton curry tender, succulent pieces of mutton slow-cooked in a rich, aromatic gravy that bursts with flavor. Paired with fluffy, perfectly cooked basmati rice, it's a dish that leaves you craving more.

Their biryani deserves special mention too. The rice is fragrant, cooked to perfection, and infused with just the right blend of spices. The chicken biryani, in particular, stands out with its juicy, well-marinated pieces of chicken buried under layers of flavorful rice. Complemented by a side of raita and spicy gravy, it’s a hearty meal that hits the spot every time.

For those looking for a vegetarian feast, the thalis are an absolute delight. A generous serving of rice, accompanied by a variety of curries, chutneys, sambar, and rasam, brings the authentic taste of South Indian home cooked food to your plate. The highlight is undoubtedly the fresh, tangy sambar that’s bursting with flavor and the tangy, well-balanced rasam that warms your soul.

And let’s not forget their dosas! Crispy, golden, and served with a medley of chutneys and piping hot sambar, they are a must-try. Whether you opt for the masala dosa, filled with spiced potato goodness, or the ghee roast dosa with its buttery, fragrant appeal, you’ll be coming back for more.

The service at Madras Mess is quick and efficient, with staff who are friendly and attentive, always ensuring that your meal is enjoyable and satisfying. The portions are generous, and the prices are reasonable, making it an excellent spot for families, friends, or anyone seeking a hearty, satisfying meal.

Madras Mess Ipoh has truly mastered the art of delivering authentic South Indian cuisine. It’s a place where every bite feels like a celebration of tradition and flavor. Whether you’re a local or just passing through Ipoh, make sure to stop by you won't be...

Unfortunately I had to delete my old review about this place.

While my prior experience at Madras Mess was delightful, this return visit fell short of the mark. While some elements shone brightly, inconsistencies in food quality and service detracted from the overall experience.

Food:

The fish dish emerged as the star of the show, boasting a vibrant sauce that tantalized the taste buds. Unfortunately, the chicken biriyani, once a highlight, disappointed this time around. The lack of spice and overcooked chicken rendered it more akin to fried rice, leaving me longing for its previous iteration. The non-vegetarian set meal also failed to impress, with the dessert as the sole saving grace. Drinks offered a mixed bag: the rose milk pleased with its sweetness, while the mango lassi underwhelmed due to its excessive tartness and lack of sweetness.

Service:

Understaffing seemed evident, causing an initial five-minute wait for order placement. While the table, floor, and air-conditioning were commendable, the banana leaves left a starkly negative impression. Despite the inherent challenge of cleaning them, the presence of visible dirt detracted from the dining experience. Perhaps offering an alternative dining surface for guests who prefer a cleaner slate could be considered.

Overall:

While flashes of brilliance were present, inconsistencies in food quality and service create a sense of uncertainty on whether a return visit will be worthwhile. The disappointing biriyani and unclean banana leaves leave a negative impression, making it difficult to wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant...

Delightful South Indian Dinner at Madras Mess, Ipoh – Mother's Day Special

We had a wonderful dinner at Madras Mess, Ipoh this past Sunday to celebrate Mother’s Day, and it was nothing short of amazing! This marks our third visit to the restaurant, and each time they’ve left us wanting more.

From the moment we walked in, the staff were professional, attentive, and friendly. Despite it being a busy evening, every time we called for the menu or wanted to add a new dish, they came over promptly and noted our requests with a smile.

The food was the real highlight, though. We ordered a variety of dishes and each one was packed with authentic South Indian flavours. My personal favourites were the Ghee Podi Dosa – crispy, aromatic, and paired beautifully with chutneys – and the strong, fragrant Bru Coffee, which was the perfect companion.

The Chicken Briyani was flavorful and came with a well-boiled egg, paired with curry and onion raita. The Chicken Chukka was tender, spicy, and full of depth. Another must-mention is the Idi Minnal Nandu Rasam – a spicy crab rasam that’s perfect for those who love bold flavors.

To end the meal, we had the Gulab Jamun with Ice Cream – deliciously warm, soft, and just the right amount of sweetness. A truly comforting dessert to finish a hearty meal.

Madras Mess continues to impress us with its food and service. We’ll definitely be back for more – already looking forward to visit...

Madras Mess in Silibin, Ipoh, is a delightful gem that beautifully showcases Chettinad and South Indian cuisine. This charming restaurant, with its vibrant interior and welcoming ambiance, immediately draws you in. During my visit, I only had the chance to sample their Kumbakonam Filter Coffee and Bru Coffee, both of which brought back fond memories of my days in Chennai. I also tried their Veg Meal set, which was delicious and authentic. Despite having to rush back to Kuala Lumpur due to an emergency, my brief experience at Madras Mess was memorable. The highlight was undoubtedly the extraordinary hospitality from Prabha, who managed the customers with grace and efficiency. Overall, the staff was good, just a bit distracted, likely due to the big breakfast crowd. Nevertheless, Prabha’s attentiveness made up for it. The prices are also quite reasonable, making it an even more attractive spot to dine. It’s wonderful to discover such a fantastic restaurant in my hometown of Ipoh. I’m looking forward to returning with my family to fully explore their menu. Madras Mess is a must-visit for anyone craving authentic Chettinad and South Indian flavors.

The food here is amazing. Thali meal was served complete with everything and then some, and they will even drizzle some ghee on rice, which is seldom practised here (but common in India). The briyani was full of flavour and the meat (both mutton and fish) was fresh and succulent, and it caters both for Malaysian and Western taste bud (we came here with an Australian couple who were still dreaming of the meal here). Filter coffee was amazing (no wonder Indian filter coffee was rated no 3 in the world for best coffee), and the strawberry shake was fresh and tasty. We went again for breakfast and it didn’t disappoint as well. Everything here was delicious and the servers were accommodating and friendly. They explained everything that they served there and moreover, the price was affordable for a meal fit for kings I don’t know what kind of wrecked taste buds the low reviewers of this joint have, but for my foodie wife who have high standards for Indian meals, she absolutely loved it!
