Peng Leng Jeng restaurant that needs no introduction.
Aman Suria is blessed with many restaurants that provide value for money meals, or "peng leng jeng" in Cantonese, to the public. Yan Wo is definitely one of them and very popular with many friends and families alike. The spaciousness and speed of delivery play important roles too.
So far I've only gone to Yan Wo once - GUILTY! - but that very first time had left quite a good impression on me and my family. I remember that it was a Friday evening and we arrived quite early before 6.30pm which needless to say, we got ourselves a table without any queueing needed.
Whole book of menu with pictures was given to make it easier for me to choose, point and order on the spot.
◾一支骨 Whole spare ribs covered in thick & sweet sauce - I realised that most (if not all) restaurants in this area serve this particular dish. One humongous pork ribs doused with thick, sticky and sweet sauce made such a delicious meat to eat. The ratio between fat & lean meat was good as well. ◾Spare ribs cooked with thick spicy homemade sauce - just because the sonny wanted something spicy for his plate of white rice. Served on aluminium sheet on a hotplate, everything was sizzling when served. Quite delicious on its own right. ◾Kam Heong lala - gotta give them credit for making sure that each and every mollusc covered with the thick and spicy sauce. My son alone whacked half plate. ◾Larb moo tod - their take on this Thai snack which if I may say.. quite good. ◾Butter chicken with pumpkin puree - not sure if this is a common combination but somehow both worked well together. ◾signature homemade tofu with salted egg - never failed to order this one because the kids absolutely love it. ◾claypot water spinach with dried shrimps ◾Soup
Along with Hao Yue Lou Seafood nearby which technically about 300 metres away, Yan Wo Seafood proves to be one popular destinations for families, friends and colleagues alike. I like this place because it's a proper...
Read moreHave 'heard' and read a lot of reviews on social media on this place and finally got to visit. They have two (?) outlets (if I am not mistaken) and we went to the one in Aman Suria. Arrived before 6.30pm and already the place is almost full. And by the time we are done and leaving, there is a queue at the doorstep.
Ordered their claypot patin fish, fried chicken with special sauce, salt and pepper squid, dual types of kailan and their crab meat tofu. Overall, the food is good. Quality, portions, taste and pricing are comparable to other dai chow restaurants.
Fried chicken with special sauce - Very addictive. Sauce is sweet with large coating of peanuts. The chicken meat is slightly dry. Overall flavour and taste is a great combination and one of the best tasting dish (although not the healthiest). Some might find the dish too sweet for their liking.
Salt and Pepper squid - Overall a good dish, too. Squid is tender and fried just right and not rubbery. The salt and pepper bits were also not too salty thus quite balanced in taste to the fried squid.
Kai Lan - chose the dual type. The greens are very fresh and the sauteed ones are crunchy and not overcooked. The fried bits are also not overly oily and fried well. Overall, a decent dish as well but nothing too unique for a vegetable dish.
Crab meat tofu - Quite different from the usual crab meat tofu we order at other restaurants. Slightly underwhelming dish. This came with more 'toppings' which includes enoki mushrooms, snow peas and carrots. Didn't really taste the crab meat anywhere and sauce is slightly over salty. Tofu, however is soft and creamy so that's good.
Claypot Patin Fish - very fresh and flavourful and meat is not overcooked. This is the most expensive dish but the price is probably for the 'claypot' presentation. Not extraordinary I would say this might not be worth paying for the claypot thus should choose the regular steamed one for fish...
Read moreI've been here many times because the food is nice, but this is my first time here for a reunion dinner—and it will probably be my last. They are doing two seating times: 6pm and 8pm. For the 6pm seating, waited until 7:30pm before the food was served, and to finish within half an hour for the next section. For the 8pm seating, waited until about 9:30–9:45pm before started eating. By 10pm, we had finished (without feeling rushed, but we were starving) and realised they were still serving food, possibly for the last table. I'm not sure how they arranged the order of serving the tables—whether it was first-come, first-served or based on something else—because no one could give us an answer. After walking up and down a few times, I noticed they served the downstairs tables first, then the upstairs ones.
We ordered 7 dishes, and the price was half of what the reunion dinner sets cost at other restaurants. The prices are very reasonable, as it's similar to ordering from a normal menu with a limited selection, but it still covers all types of dishes such as fish, prawns, mantis shrimp, meat, chicken, lala, vegetables, and more. The food quality was good, although some dishes were slightly different from what we expected. Overall, it was still a good. If you plan to come for a reunion dinner next time, try to book a table downstairs and finish eating within half an hour.
Of course, this setup seems to benefit the restaurant’s organization since they can finish each seating within two hours. When we left before 10:30pm, the tables downstairs had already been cleared.
My rating is based on reunion...
