When we arrived Sarikei, we headed straight to Glory Cafe. Upon checking their menu, I ordered their famous prawn mee inside a coconut served with tom yum soup, the prawn mee served in foochow mee soup with wine, sotong fried with sambal sauce and patin fish with foochow mee soup. As appetizer we had 8 pieces of their sio bee (siu mai) because I saw the staff packing them into trays to be transported to various areas of Sarawak.
After our sio bee and waiting for our foods, a vendor approached us offering locally grown “Thailand mango” (that was what he said) and I bought one (with yellow skin) while the restaurant staff bought two but the skin was green. I asked the staff to peel the mango for us as I intended to have it as desserts.
My verdict on these prawn mee dishes? First, the patin with foochow mee soup. You could taste that the patin fish was cultivated as the meat has no texture and soft and the fat contain rather high. Taste-wise, it was bland with a hint of fish. The soup was just the normal foochow mee soup and thus there was nothing to shout about.
Secondly, the prawn mee in foochow mee soup with wine. It was served with 1 and a half prawn (the prawn served was what the local called “big head prawn” or “udang galah”) cut into half. This soup was better than the one served with the patin fish. During the finishing stage on the taste buds, you could taste the wine which added another dimension to the soup. But the finishing was very brief. As for the prawn, personally I felt that they were overcooked for the flesh was a bit leathery.
As for the Cafe signature dish, the presentation was eye catching with a green coconut and 2 halves of the prawn proudly placed on the top opening with lemon grass resting on them. The other half of the prawn was inside the coconut together with the foochow mee. The tom yam soup looked creamy with a layer of reddish chili sauce. First taste of the tom yam soup was as its appearance. A rich taste (in term of creaminess) layered with a bit of lemon grass taste and a hint of spiciness. However the lingering taste on the mouth was something that did not agreed with what I saw. There was a prolong lingering of sweetness which overpowered all the previous taste. Subsequent mouthful was just one dimension and that was sweetness. The sweetness definitely did not come from a natural source or ingredient. I suspected that sugar hd been added to the soup which totally ruined it. To make it worst, the taste of creaminess did not taste like it was from coconut milk…...but more from milk? Everyone knew how coconut milk creaminess taste like which was much denser than milk. We called it “lemak”. The creaminess on this dish was just flat and single dimension. The saving grace was that the prawns were cooked proper as the flesh was tender.
The dishes were a disappointment with all those hikes. Both prawn mee dishes were a disappointment as the taste of prawn was distinctly missing from the soup. I have the distinct feeling that I was having foochow mee soup with prawn placed on top as the source of protein. The two main components did not combine to form the dish.
Finally, the sotong was fried just right for they were chewy but not tough.
As for the yellow mango, it could not compare with the original Thai mango. Firstly, the taste was inferior and rather bland. Secondly, the flesh was not firm and rather mushy. However, I pinched a couple of the green mango that the cafe staff bought and it was definitely better. The flesh was firmer and there was a stronger...
Read moreIt was a hari raya holiday on which day many from outstation flocked to this famed cafe predominantly for prawn noodles. This time round, a second visit, the first being years back. Meant to go for breakfast but as things turned out, the waiting was a two hour gruesome wait, we ended up settling for lunch. From first arriving at the cafe, difficulty finding a table n later, a chair could have cast a long ominous shadow on the service and the food. Things turned out as omens would have it. The prawn noodles were substandard, among the worse we've ever tasted. The main ingredient, the prawns, clearly frozen for sometime, were thawed off it's freshness and original taste. A horrible culinary experience indeed, to say the least. The lesson learnt is this over publicised food outlet in a bid for more customers and cash would inevitably find it hard to sustain the nascent quality which once characterised her and set her apart. It's no longer quality that drives her any more. Customer's great culinary experience is no longer tenaciously guarded. So my grade for this cafe is no grade. A food outlet which is average is not worth visiting but this one fails to hit even average. For better experience try Marathon...
