Dae Jang Gum was the neighbourhood go to restaurant for my family when we wanted Korean BBQ for the past many years. They could be slightly more expensive but the quality of their food was good. However, our experience for the past few visits has deteriorated. Last weekend’s visit got worst. We went there being a family of two adults and one children. We order two BBQ portions - pork and beef. We felt that should be enough because we aren’t that hungry. Then the waiter insisted that we must order 3 dishes because we are a party of three. I told him he have enough but he keep insisting. Then the lady boss who was standing next to our table turned around and try to sense what’s the conversation is about. So I explained our situation and to my surprise she did the same. And I was thinking “wow, time must be bad that the restaurant now forced people to order more even the customers don’t need it.” So I relented from reasoning with them and go ahead ordered something that we don’t really need. Then came the food. To add to our earlier episode, both the meats wasn’t as good as they normally are - they are a bit tough without the tenderness of fresh meats. So you can imagine our disappointment. I know the owner is proud of their business and reputation (just look at their responses in this review section) and they have the right to feel that. At the same time customers have their rights to spend their money somewhere else. So I guess I can only do what I can do - move on to other...
Read moreCame here for a dinner with my mom on a weekday.
Food I was welcomed by a variety of kimchi after ordering. The kimchi tasted pretty mediocre, nothing too special. I ordered their Spicy Beef Stew. Very much disappointed. Despite being served in such a big bowl, the portion was a bit on the lower end. As for the variety in the stew, nothing too special as well. There was no dry fern breke included in the stew, a staple ingredient in it, and the whole bowl tasted very average, not what I expected for what I paid. Not to mention, their self proclaimed korean kimchi, tastes bland and not well presented.
Drinks I had their korean ice coffee, below average, and it costs 5 ringgit before tax, even a random mamak shop makes better coffee.
Environment I gotta agree with other reviews on the dated style, but it is fine with me. What is not fine with me is, their staff being loud when conversing with each other, I could hear them clearer than my mom right opposite of me, and what ticks me off is actually them being loud chit chatting random topics rather than conversing about topics related to their job.
Price Above averagely priced, below average food and service. All of that plus the soon abolished gst, and service charge.
The verdict Nope, won't recommend dropping by as there are actually two better korean restaurants just around the area (one is dao rae, the other I cant...
