Heng Kee Tua Jiu Thou Restaurant — Restaurant in Selangor

Uuuu.....something new is brewing in Heng Heng Lai Restaurant. It has caught the craze of "Lala Hotpot" and is now offering it to patrons and local people of Batang Kali. An earthen claypot is heated over bristling hot coals. Ginger slivers and a few potent bird's eye chillies are added with sesame oil and fried till fragrant. A plate if "Tua Thow"(big head clams) are added in, chicken broth subsequently topped to the brim of the claypot and it is then left to boil. Once boiling, you add(according to taste), Hua Tiaw Wine, fried garlic, spring onions, coriander leaved and then pick and choose your steamboat items. I can tell you is that meatballs, pork slices and pork liver, kidney and stomach goes extremely well with the Lala soup - it warms the senses, heightens the taste buds and activates the saliva and gastric juices to start production in an embarrassing way. Is it affordable? It depends on your steamboat item choices. My brother and i ate, inclusive of a large pot of Chinese tea comes to RM99. Will i go there again? Not immediately - the soup works wonders to heat your body up and get the "Chi" flowing but it can give you a sore throat, not to mention a slight diarrhoea if it gets too spicy...

We never visited this restaurant before, even though it is so close to home, as my late father always had his go-to spot for our family dinners.

This time, my sister suggested we try it for a family gathering, and it did not disappoint. Every dish we ordered turned out delicious, and the restaurant was not too crowded.

The fish, lemon chicken, yam ring with sweet and sour pork, and kung pao mantis prawn were all very good. I was impressed with the yam ring, it was so well made, with a fluffy texture and strong yam aroma.

I realised afterwards that I ordered too many deep-fried and sweet-sour dishes, but surprisingly, it did not feel overwhelming. Next time I will try to balance it better. The pork knuckle was just okay.

Prices seemed reasonable overall. Definitely worth revisiting, and I would like to try the lala...
