If you are looking for a traditional Maltese restaurant, then you should definitely head to Mgarr and visit UNITED. The menu is filled with Maltese delicacies from start to finish. The rabbit, in particular, is a delicacy here that is worth going all the way for. The restaurant is easy to find in the small town, as it is located directly behind the imposing Mgarr church. United, the name stands for connection and union. That is exactly what happens here. As a guest you come, as a friend you go. The staff is friendly, familiar and served us lovingly all around. The advice on the dishes is detailed and you simply have to try it. The starters are so delicious that it's hard to decide. Lots of pasta with delicious ingredients from Maltese cuisine, plus salads and main courses that make the heart of a connoisseur beat faster. We had Maltese Rabbit with garlic and a sauce to fall in love with. We also had Pork Belly with couscous. Tender, juicy and crispy. It was a delight. It was accompanied by local wine from the region and topped off with a dessert that sweetened the evening. There are daily specials, also fresh fish and always sophisticated flavours. If you like to sit outside, you can do so in front of the restaurant, but you have to put up with traffic. We didn't mind, because Mgarr is a dreamy village in the evening and not a racetrack. Although many places are closed on Mondays, here you can get all the goodies fresh from the region on Mondays too. It is important to buy the goods in the vicinity and thus support the local suppliers and farmers. Price, performance, quality and service deserve full 5 stars here. We will definitely be back....Thank you, dear UNITED team....
Read moreI wish i could make this up, I’ve been to the united restaurant behind the church two other times before today. i loved it. today was the third and last time i came here. We came to celebrate my dads birthday, a family of 5. the waiter accidentally gave my two brothers someone else’s food (which was the same thing they ordered, two burgers) and when they had started taking the first bite from their chips, the waiter placed his hands on their plate asking them to “please please please” let him “take it back” to which i replied, “ are you seriously going to give that to someone else after they touched it?” to which he said “they only ate some chips”. I honestly wish i was making this up because i loved coming here. then it was time for my mains. i got my usual, salmon with herb crust. it had a long strand of hair embedded in the top of the salmon, right under the herb crust, i had to dig a bit to actually get to the hair, to which i then pulled out and pointed out to the waiter. i saw that the chef was a woman with a loose ponytail so i immediately knew it was from her. the waiter said “ do you want another one since the hair was only on top of the fish” i asked him to make another one. i’m a chef myself so this is honestly a joke that they would serve this and have this attitude with paying guests. i wouldn’t have made a big deal out of it if they acted differently, their attitude wasn’t empathetic enough and it felt like we weren’t being taken seriously. my mum had been wanting to come here for so long but we are so dissapointed, by the attitude of the waiter. i then asked to get my chips takeaway, and the waiter literally grabbed them with his hand and...
Read moreI am from the US and all of my Maltese friends from both Gozo and Malta raved about this restaurant, so I had to go! It did not disappoint. Service was extremely pleasant, courteous, and customer-oriented. As per the recommendations, I ordered: local Medina red wine (blend of syrah, carignan, and grenache) with the meal, snails as a starter, the trio (bacon wrapped quail, rabbit, and horse) as my main, seasonal vegetables and fried potatoes as sides, and imqaret and espresso for dessert. There was also a homemade digestif liqueur (honey dew melon, basil, mint, and chilli) on the house. The snails were the highlight - definitely get it. It came in a spiced sauce unlike anything I've ever tasted. It had a strong cardamom flavour, with a touch of cinnamon and laurel leaf, among other things. The main was just lightly seasoned and fried, slightly dry/well-done but it worked. Perhaps a sauce for the rabbit would be nice to saturate it a bit? Still, it was nice to try the sampler of all the traditional meats. Dessert was a fried pastry filled with dates, with a side of candied fruit ice cream - a dessert of the gods! The digestif was also divine - light and refreshing, perfect for the hot climate. Lastly, prices were beyond fair for the quality of the food and service! If you had only one restaurant to go to in Malta, definitely go...
