My friends and I had a good time at El Sazón de los Abuelos while we were on a short birthday trip to Tecate. The chips and guacamole were a very tasty start to our meal—everything tasted very fresh, like it was prepared to order. I really liked the salsas they served as well, especially the very flavorful habanero.

For our mains we had barbacoa, caldo tlalpeño, and a beet-microgreens-walnut-steak salad. Everything was flavorful, fresh, and very nicely presented. I enjoyed the caldo quite a bit, but it was even better after I poured some habanero salsa in it.

The restaurant itself is quite large, cleanly, has sparkling clean bathrooms, and the seating is comfortable. Staff is extremely nice and welcoming. My friend let them know it was my birthday and the staff put a sombrero on my head, put up a small piñata on a stick and gave me a stick to hit it while they sang happy birthday to me.

The decor is random, great entrance with beautiful pots, a bakery/sweets section, and in the middle of the restaurant a tortilla making section. The floorplan is too open where the serving stations, child playing area, or exits are too visible (too mismatched like fast casual in the rear and full service in the front). The service is good and prompt, the menu has great selection and the ingredients seem fresh. The portions are huge for the price, yet lack much taste or the taste just average, some items were bland while others a bit oversalted.
