Restaurante La Fonda de las Piñatas — Restaurant in Cancún

This is my first review of many that I plan to do. Follow me and let me help you find some great spots around the Cancun area.

La Fonda de las Pinatas is a great local restaurant. They do offer a buffet option, but they are far from being a regular "buffet" restaurant. Most of the time I visit I end up ordering the "two cazuelas" special. It is 80 to 90 pesos, it includes soup of the day, a drink, and you choose two options from their cazuelas (clay pots). They also have a la cart menu, with items like rib eye, enchiladas, stuffed peppers (chiles rellenos), etc.

The rib eye can be amazing or dry, depending on who cooks it. One time it was dry enough that I had to send it back, but the owner was very nice about it.

For tourists I would suggest you do go the buffet route. They have about 15 clay pots, each with a different dish. By going the buffet route you get to try a bit of each of their dishes and that way you figure out what you like best. The buffet price is under 150 pesos, so about $8 USD.

Their non alcoholic drinks are amazing as well. They call them "aguas frescas" which translates to "fresh waters" which doesn't translate well. By Aguas frescas they mean they are made from scratch. They do switch them around, usually only offering two different types per day. Their horchata water (rice water) is great. Most people that offer horchata water use the commercial syrup, but this place actually makes theirs from scratch. They also have a very good one with mint.

They do offer beers, mixed drinks and regular sodas as well. I've had a few beers there before but I have never tried their mixed drinks so not sure how good or bad they could be. In fact I've never seen them make a cocktail, so definitely not know for that.

My favorite cazuelas there are the green mole, and "chicharron prensado" which is pressed pork rind. The owner is from Jalisco Mexico, so her recipes are from that area. There are many dishes that are common on different states, but usually each state has its own twist. Think bbq in texas vs bbq from South Carolina.

It is sad that I have to change my review from 5star to 1 star especially after how the OWNER treated me and gave me attitude. Before I started eating I asked the waiter why the plate wasn’t like how it was before, I also meant by quantity cause my bowl came half empty missing the bacon and onion then the waiter said that’s how it came so I left it be. But then when I started eating it was super salty so I pushed it to the side. Even giving the benefit of doubt they are having a bad day. Then when the owner saw I wasn’t eating it she asked if everything was okay then I told her everything she said if I didn’t like it why did I eat so much. But the bowl came half empty!!!!! The portion size doesn’t matter to me cause I have a gastric sleeve but her attitude was so bad!!!! Then she made it seem like I was trying to get the food for free saying I should have told someone. Google me pregunta que tal estuvo. Bueno... Primera vez que voy en familia a este restaurante. Yo Decidí tomar la opción de buffet para probar los diferentes guisados. La mecánica es que te sirven en tiempos y de tres guisos en un plato a la vez. Solo alcance a probar 3. El sabor es de una verdadera cocina mexicana con ese toque casero de comida de cazuela. Los platillos a la carta, esta bien y porciones generosas, muy buen toque y sabor. Lamentablemente el buen sazón se vio fuertemente opacado por el servicio. Nuestro mesero nos tomo la orden de comida y bebidas. Yo le indique que optaría por el buffet y pedí los primeros tres guisos quería de entrada. Después de un tiempo, ligeramente excesivo, llegaron los platillos a la carta junto con mi plato "buffet". Después de entregar los alimentos... Nuestro mesero jamás se volvió a aparecer. Debo decir que mis guisos ya venían fríos. Pareciera que estuvieron esperando a ser recogidos. Las tortillas, también debo decir; que aunque son hechas a mano, estaban frías y tayudas. Cómo si fueran recalentadas. Al rebuscar las tortillas dentro del guantesito dónde te las traen, las de más abajo se sintieron mejor. calientitas y frescas. Cómo anteriormente lo dije. Nuestro mesero prácticamente nos abandonó. Y tristemente ningún otro mesero se tomó la molestia de acercarse y preguntarnos si necesitábamos algo más. Hasta que yo le dije a una mesera que quería probar otro guisos del buffet. Para este momento yo me sentía ya algo defraudado y el hambre se había mitigado. Prácticamente comimos sin que nadie nos atendiera. Pasados más de 30 minutos ya cuando estábamos a punto de terminar. Nuestro mesero llegó muy sonriente él y nos pregunta si queremos algo más. A lo cual yo le respondí que por qué nos había dejado y no había venido antes. El respondió. "Es que me fui a comer". (Entiendo que todos tenemos nuestro tiempo sagrado para comer en nuestros roles laborales) pero por qué nadie cubrió a este mesero? Pareciera que no hay trabajo en equipo y los comensales son secundarios. Lo único que le pedí, fue la cuenta. Por otro lado; Los platillos que mi esposa e hija pidieron, sinceramente estuvieron muy bien y a ellas les gustó mucho y eso amortigua mi molestia. Pero honestamente el buffet se me hizo excesivo en precio para el servicio y las porciones. Por el mismo precio te vas al churrasco. Generalmente está fue MI experiencia y no estoy seguro de ir...
