Bakéa — Restaurant in Mexico City

Sigh, I really wanted to love this restaurant. I had chosen it because chef Vicente Etchegaray was highlighted in the 50 Best Discovery list for his Mexican-Basque fusion. We had high expectations.

Overall the dishes were just too rich for us. Lots of cream and oil. Each dish was very tasty, and the ingredients were of very high quality, but the overall meal lacked balance. Also we did not find that the dishes were particularly Mexican or Basque — more Parisian. (Google does list it as French.) Our choices might have been better if we had advice from an English-speaking server, but our (very friendly and competent) server and we were just getting by with his modest English and our modest Spanish.

El día de hoy, domingo 29 de junio, acudí al restaurante Baquea acompañado de varios familiares con el antojo de disfrutar un postre, un café y algunos aperitivos y digestivos. Llegamos a las 4:20 de la tarde, y al observar el lugar, notamos que solo había seis mesas ocupadas: El restaurante estaba, en efecto, a no más de una cuarta parte de su capacidad.

Una vez sentados, se nos acercó un mesero, con todo el tacto, para informarnos que, por políticas del establecimiento, no podían brindarnos servicio si no realizábamos un “consumo completo”. Le explicamos que nuestra intención era precisamente pedir postres, café, y algunas bebidas digestivas, pero aun así se nos negó el servicio de forma definitiva.

Cabe señalar que el mesero fue respetuoso y simplemente cumplía con instrucciones. Sin embargo, la política que aplicó —establecida evidentemente por la dirección del restaurante— es la que nos resulta inaceptable.

Después de más de diez años siendo clientes frecuentes de Baquea, esta experiencia nos dejó francamente indignados. No se trató de un malentendido ni de una negativa justificada por alta demanda: estábamos dispuestos a consumir, en un local casi vacío.

Resulta doloroso ver cómo un restaurante que durante años representó hospitalidad y excelencia ha optado por tratar a sus clientes, incluso a los más fieles, con una rigidez absurda y una falta total de criterio.

Con pesar, pero con firmeza, afirmamos que esta ha sido nuestra última visita a Baquea, hemos enviado una copia de esta reseña al chat de todos nuestros amigos y vecinos...
