We planned our trip to Mexico City around celebrating my niece’s birthday, and she had her heart set on starting the celebration at Lavo. Unfortunately, what began as a promising evening with great food and service quickly turned into one of the worst experiences of our vacation.
The trouble started when we ordered three dirty martinis. The waiter returned to inform us that using Grey Goose would be an extra $100 per drink. We declined and asked for Absolut instead. When the drinks arrived, they were nearly undrinkable — pure vodka with an overpowering amount of vermouth. We asked for olive juice to try to salvage them, but that’s when things went downhill.
Our waiter, clearly embarrassed, told us his manager wouldn’t allow the drinks to be remade or refunded. We didn’t want anything free — just a drink we could actually enjoy. The general manager and his assistant went back and forth with the waiter, but the answer remained no. At that point, we asked for the check so we could leave and find another place to celebrate.
Shockingly, when the bill came, we were charged the $100 Grey Goose upcharge — for drinks we never ordered or received! We had to call the manager back again to explain, and he only refunded $75 per drink, not the full incorrect charge.
I’ve visited Mexico many times and have had countless amazing dining experiences here, but I have never been treated this poorly. The way this situation was handled was unacceptable.
Do yourself a favor — skip Lavo in Mexico City. There are so many other incredible restaurants in this city where you’ll be treated with respect and enjoy the experience...
Read moreWe went to Lavo in Mexico City for my birthday dinner, expecting a fun night out at a trendy spot—but unfortunately, it turned out to be one of the most disappointing dining experiences we’ve had in the city.
The main issue started with the drinks. We ordered dirty martinis, but what arrived was essentially a glass of straight vodka—completely unbalanced and nothing like what was advertised. When we politely asked for more olive juice to fix the drinks, the staff responded unprofessionally. Instead of a simple solution, the management made an unnecessary scene, creating tension that completely ruined the mood of the evening.
To make things worse, they tried to charge us for Grey Goose vodka even though we had specifically ordered Absolut. It felt like we were being taken advantage of, and any attempt to clarify the mistake was met with resistance and attitude.
What should have been a special, celebratory dinner ended up feeling stressful and uncomfortable. We won’t be going back, and we wouldn’t recommend Lavo to anyone looking for a great dining experience in Mexico City. Read moreThe ambience is very nice. Well-designed love the architectural work, however Unfortunately certain things let us down based upon the high pricing of this restaurant. I feel they want to be more than what they are. For example, they did not have any horseradish for the oysters, they tried five times to get us balsamic vinegar for our salad, which they did not have, they kept bringing us balsamic glaze instead, which is too sweet for what we wanted and they don’t have any mint jelly for the lamb chops if you were to order them. My New York steak ordered medium rare, came overcooked and very tough- hard to eat. The best meal was the short rib lasagna. Although the service was great, we are not going to return here soon- much better choices at Puerto Madero and or Sylvestre‘s to name a few for the money you pay. We were very disappointed And hopefully this helps the management that reads this And will try again in six...
