I never do reviews but man this restaurant was such a treat that they deserve all the praise they can get!
My partner and I visited Mexico a few weeks back and the Pueblo of Tepotzlan was on our list as well. Not knowing where to eat (we don't like to eat at very touristic places) we avoided the main street and tried this colorful street-side restaurant a little bit further downtown.
Staff is very friendly and welcoming, cocktails very affordable and damn tasty. Not too sweet, not too sour, just right. The fish dishes were to die for. I kid you not. I almost cried. My favorite was the Tostada el Atun with the freshest tuna I have ever tasted. Definitely nothing like the average Mexican tostada, which in my opinion often lacks flavor. This tostada was packed with a-typical flavors, a wow- explosion in my mouth, almost crying tears of happiness. This dish is creative, intelligent and divine at the same time.
Armando the owner makes you truly feel at home with self-brewed (and again, very tasty) ice cold mezcal and stories on where he gets his tuna from: a family endeavor (and tradition)from Zihuatanejo. He learned to cut the fish at a very young age from his mom and he kept on experiencing with different ways on how to prepare the fish ever since. All these years of experience are now all bundled up in the artistic kitchen of Tepetzlan the restaurant.
I would have stayed longer in Tepotzlan just for this restaurant.
This place is a gem ready to take over the world! Don't miss out your chance when you get it.
Gracias Armando, until we meet again friend.
Read moreTepeztlán has been my favorite restaurant in Tepoztlán since they opened. And while I only live here half the year, I have eaten at almost all the rated spots in the region. I can say without any hyperbole, nothing comes close to Tepez, in terms of customer service, quality of the food, the variety of the menu, the overall dining experience. They're just above and beyond all the other restaurants around. The other thing about only being here half the year is that you always fear that when you return your favorite restaurant will have started to slack off, just phoning it in, resting on their laurels, however you want to describe that sad but common phenomenon where great restaurants slip into mediocrity. I think the most impressive thing about Tepeztlán is that they are doing the opposite. They strive and succeed in getting better and better as they get older. The menu is constantly growing, refining, improving. And as the grow, they somehow continue to keep the warmth and welcoming vibe that made them a hit in the first place. Truly a remarkable restaurant. Anyone living in or just coming through Tepoz needs to eat at Tepez, a must dine...
Read moreI call this place home. Chef Armando and his partner-in-crime Carmen, have created a gem of a Mariscos joint up here in the mountains. Hmm wait, seafood in the mountains, you wonder? Fret not, the fish is delivered fresh each week from Armando's own fishing town where he grew up fishing since the age of 7. Tepeztlan is a true labor of love and a pure Mexican affair - you will love the ambience and the food alike. The menu keeps expanding, my new favs being the Aguachile de Atún and a new Peruvian inspired dish we nicknamed 'Tiramisu de Pulpo'. The classics and hits remain consistently good too. You can never go wrong with the ceviche and the tacos. And of course, my personal favorite, the Pescado a la talla. Did I mention they also have solid cocktails and great mezcal? Why are you still reading, head down to...
