Las Palomas de Santiago – Restaurant José Mariano Abasolo 101, Santiago, Nuevo León, Mexico
Located in the picturesque town of Santiago, Las Palomas de Santiago blends rustic elegance with authentic northern Mexican cuisine. Surrounded by colonial architecture and lush gardens, the restaurant provides both a sensory and cultural experience that extends well beyond the plate.
Food The meal began with a dish accompanied by the house dressing—a humble yet refreshing start. The simplicity of the ingredients allowed the dressing to take center stage, offering a tangy and well-balanced flavor profile that elevated the dish. It’s a reminder that great food doesn’t always require complexity. 8/10
The Parrillada Especial, designed for four guests, was a true centerpiece. A well-executed selection of imported arrachera (700g), top sirloin, grilled sausage, baked potato, caramelized onions, blistered chiles, fideo seco tacos, and rich frijoles con veneno. Every item was thoughtfully prepared—the meats grilled to perfection, the accompaniments hearty and flavorful. It’s a vibrant, shareable feast that embodies the essence of traditional parrillada with a refined touch. 9/10
The standout dish was the Machito de Cabrito a las Brasas. This house specialty, featuring carefully selected baby goat from the region, is grilled over open flames to achieve a smoky, tender finish. Deeply flavorful with a rustic authenticity that’s hard to come by, it’s a dish that honors local tradition while delighting the palate. 9/10
Ambiance The setting is nothing short of charming. Surrounded by gardens and just steps away from a historic church, the restaurant’s outdoor area offers an idyllic view that enhances the overall dining experience. Inside, rustic décor and warm colors create a welcoming atmosphere. Tables and chairs are comfortable, inviting guests to linger. 9/10
Service Service was gracious and professional. The staff were attentive without being overbearing, offering recommendations with confidence and checking in regularly to ensure everything was to our satisfaction. Their hospitality contributed greatly to the enjoyment of the meal. 9/10
Price For the quality, portion size, and overall experience, the prices are very reasonable. The restaurant strikes a commendable balance between authenticity and value.
Verdict Las Palomas de Santiago delivers a refined yet deeply rooted expression of northern Mexican cuisine. With excellent food, attentive service, and a setting rich in charm, it’s a destination that goes beyond a meal—it offers a true taste of Santiago’s culinary and cultural spirit. A must-visit that I look forward to returning to on my next journey...
Read moreI was somewhat apprehensive about my hotel reservation at this particular hotel until I arrived. Despite the low price for a room at this hotel, the staff, facility, restaurant, and the room were outstanding! The hotel is located in a quaint village like setting with the hotel itself styled as a hacienda retro design. The staff was absolutely amazing from the reservation team to the restaurant staff, and to the management. Never have I paid so little to be treated like a VIP!! The hotel pool is located behind the grounds in the Spa section and even though it was temporarily closed , the staff personally escorted us to the spa area and opened the pool so the kids could swim during their stay. Special accommodation was even made for my autistic son to bring in outside food/cooler to the room (despite being against the rules) due to an eating/sensory issue. The clean rooms were traditionally decorated and hot water was Not an issue as is in many budget to moderate priced rooms in Mexico. The room was appointed with coffee maker, bottled water, Neutrogena brand toiletries, hair dryer, and iron/ironing board. Ice is available upon request. I did not use the Spa services although they are available. Limited television channels are available in English for evening viewing however, with such nice views of the village like town , I can't imagine tv viewing being much of a priority. Tucked away in the property is a small playground for young children as well as a small walking park in front of the hotel. For the budget-moderate priced traveller this hotel is a must stay! We will definitely...
