El Timón - Restaurant Bar — Restaurant in Progreso

Wanted to give this place a try based on reviews. We sat outside which was good for us. Although it would be nice to have a chair with a back. Not just picnic style tables. The server was prompt, polite, friendly & decent English, which was appreciated. I had Tamarindo water, which to me was weak. Not much taste. No problems with the beer! My husband ordered garlic shrimp. He said it was good. Nice size shrimp with rice & a few veges. I unfortunately ordered the coconut shrimp. When served, I noticed they appeared to be overcooked. The first one I ate was sooo tough. Hard to bite & chew. Never had this issue with a shrimp before! Next one was the same. I decided to remove some of the breading. Sure glad I did! The shrimp were not deveined 🤢 this is very disgusting!! At this point, I could no longer try to eat them. I did not say anything to the server. I'm with a tour group and we dropped in for a lunch of sea bass and flan. The restaurant is right on the Gulf. You can eat inside in AC or outside on a shaded patio which today has a nice breeze. Though the day was hot we were comfortable. Wait staff were on the ball. Food came quickly. The bass was prepared simple in a for dredge then fried in a pan. So fresh and so good! Served with vegetables and rice. Perfect lunch on a hot day. The flan was also great. Bathrooms were clean. We are still in the process of finding our way around Progreso, and we're thrilled we found El Timon! The botanas are really nice and I love the mango daiquiri, especially when served as a cooler. The booth seating is beat down and not too comfortable, but you soon forget. This is the most delicious food we have had in Progreso so far and the service & prices complete the overall excellent experience.
