Mama Mía Express — Restaurant in San Miguel de Allende

First visit: Convenient place for lunch if you are staying in Los Balcones barrio in San Miguel. No need to go to town for real good thin crust pizza. The place is nice under the giant umbrellas, and is run by the daughter of the owners of the big Mamma Mia in town. While I love the latter’s funky outdoors patio I’m not fond of their food. I was very pleasantly surprised here, my rancho Luna pizza was delicious, and so was the home made agua de Jamaica, a flower based sweet iced tea. The menu consists of pizzas, lasagnas, salads and chicken wings. I’ll be back to try everything! Second visit a week later: this time I tried their arugula and fig salad which was excellent, and their bbq wings which were not. Both the tomato and the cheese sauces accompanying the wings were delicious, but the wings themselves did not taste fresh at all . They’re supposed to be organic, but the various Pollo Feliz franchises have much better tasting chicken, albeit non-organic. I mentioned this to the lovely waitress, however I get the distinct feeling that she did not convey the bad news to the chef as I asked her to. So I’m revising my rating from five stars to...

I should have known when I called and asked if they speak English and they hung up on me. I went ahead and drove there since it's a short distance. This was around 7:00 p.m. and there was absolutely no one there, which is always a red flag. I ordered two pizzas and salad to go and asked for a glass of Casa de agua. The next 48 hours of my life were pure hell. Explosive diarrhea and stomach pains. I am convinced she gave me tap water to drink.
