Doña Quela — Restaurant in San Miguel de Cozumel

Update: I went back to try the fried chicken meal. I ordered a piece of dark and a piece of white meat. It was cooked very well and delicious! I opted for the mashed potatoes and 2 servings of coleslaw instead of the rice. The potatoes tasted good, but the consistency was off, and the coleslaw was decent. I'll be back for the chicken!

I know I'm going to have the unpopular opinion here, but it's honest and I'm basing it off of my visit today. We had a table of 4, ordering 3 different items. The Pollo Crunchy was a thin piece of fried chicken, smothered with sausage gravy, served with two scrambled eggs, house-made hash browns and toast. It was decent, and the best thing ordered at our table. The Tiras are good-sized chicken strips coated with barbecue sauce. They come with a side of rice, a side of what tasted like boxed mashed potatoes with brown gravy, along with some honey mustard. A side of potatoes was subbed for the rice, so I can't comment on the rice. The chicken was so rubbery that my friend didn't eat it. And he eats pretty much everything. 2 Bisquets de Pollo were ordered. It's a thin piece of fried chicken with a scrambled egg and a processed cheese slice on a biscuit. (The picture I posted was actually the bigger piece of chicken of the 2. The other one was almost half that thick.) The chicken was also very rubbery and something just tasted off - maybe like something had been frozen. One of the orders of the bisquets was ordered as a combo and came with a heated frozen hash brown and an apple soda. I wanted to love this place. I really did. WOW, if you want delicious chicken and chicken wings, this is the place for you. The chicken is crispy on the outside, tender and moist on the inside The wings come in many amazing flavors, so far we have had parmesan and garlic (my favorite), sweet and sour and BBQ. Next time we will try the the tamarin flavor. They also make amazing pork riblets with mashed potatoes and homemade gravy. The owner, Cinthia, is a real Sweetheart and speaks fluent English which is great for us with only "pequito Espanol". The staff are also friendly and very accommodating. It is 2 1/2 km walk from our hotel to Dona Quela, but it is well worth the trip. This is definitely, a must go to place to...

I have had them 3 times so far. They have wonderful chicken! Way better than KFC! Always hot and fresh. It was a little strange the first time getting potatoes and gravy in bags but how smart is that!?!? Cost efficient and less waste. If you don't want it in the bag dump it...
