Getting there: we actually took the bus leaving from the Autobuses del Norte station at 9am and paid $300 MXN for two adults ($120 RT x 2) and one kid ($60 RT) = $17.48 USD as of this writing. We were dropped off by the gate 2 that leads straight to the pyramid of the sun. We took some photos then raced to make our reservation. The gps took us towards the right of the pyramid and towards the museum area where the road splits off. We followed the gpa through the gate 5 parking lot, away from the museum, crossed the street and there is literally a sign that says La Gruta. We kept following the sign and after we passed the La Gruta parking lot we got our first view of the cave. We made our 11am reservation exactly on time and I’m so glad we made reservations because when we left the premise there was a huge line of people waiting to eat. The dining experience: The food was better than I expected though everything skewed a bit bland. Biggest takeaway is that the portions were so generous we over-ordered. With two adults and a kid, I would suggest either getting two entrees and a kids meal or one guacamole and one starter and a kids meal. We ordered one guac, two entrees, and a kids meal with drinks and it was just too much food. Felt a bit wasteful and I wish I knew just how huge the molcajate was. The molcajate with chicharron was more than enough to feed 4-6 adults as an appetizer. One couple behind us only ordered the guacamole and beers. They did it right. One little thing. I mentioned my son was allergic to eggs, dairy, and nuts. His kids meal was fine until the end. I asked several times if the lemon sorbet had any of his allergens especially milk since that's a severe allergy for him. I was told several times it was water based. I trust the staff about the ingredients so maybe it was cross contamination. Sometimes ice cream is scooped using the same scooper that was used for dairy ice cream. My kid ended up reacting and threw up everything he ate in the bathroom which was an unfortunate ending to an otherwise memorable meal. I would still go back and maybe ask more questions about allergies even if it makes me the annoying patron because I'd rather be sure my son won't get sick. Overall, it was an amazing experience, especially ending the meal with a candle that we got to add to the stairs and hearing the conch and tableside fire for celebrations. Felt like we were in on a secret or something which always feels extra special. Overall I paid $105 usd including tip.

La Gruta is an absolute gem near the Teotihuacan Pyramids—a must-visit if you’re looking to immerse yourself in Mexico’s rich culinary heritage. Set within a volcanic cave, the ambiance is magical, with dim candlelight illuminating the unique cavern and creating an almost mystical atmosphere. After exploring the nearby Pyramid of the Sun and Pyramid of the Moon, we walked just five minutes to this incredible restaurant. Be sure to make a reservation; the popularity and limited space make it essential. From the moment we arrived, the service was impeccable. The staff made us feel genuinely welcomed and offered attentive recommendations on dishes. We started with guacamole accompanied by crispy pork skin—an excellent, flavorful appetizer that highlighted the best of Mexican ingredients. For mains, we chose the ribeye steak and chicken mole, both packed with authentic and robust flavors. The mole was rich, velvety, and deliciously complex, while the ribeye was cooked to perfection. To finish, the pineapple in rum dessert was a sweet, tropical ending to a memorable meal. La Gruta offers more than just food; it’s an experience, with traditional Mexican folk dance adding to the vibrant atmosphere. Visiting here is like stepping into another world, blending ancient history, local culture, and incredible flavors. Pro tip: an Uber from Mexico City costs around $25 each way, making it easy and affordable to reach. If you’re in Mexico, La Gruta is worth the journey. An unforgettable dining experience that combines pre-Hispanic influences with modern Mexican cuisine in an extraordinary setting!

Updated review 7/27/2022 Just came back from another trip to La Gruta and the experience was lovely. It's a short walk from the Gate 5 at the pyramids and there are so many safety measures in place. Every staff member is wearing a mask, and all customers are required to wash your hands before entering the premises. New tablecloths are changed per customer and sealed cutlery is given to each customer as well. Overall, the food was yummy and the service was to be expected at a busy restaurant. The only thing that soured the experience a bit, was when we were paying, we had to flag people down multiple times to bring the check. When we asked some simple questions about the restaurant while paying, they all of a sudden didn't understand us, when they were able to understand English earlier. We definitely get they were busy, but it was a little bit of a "??" moment for us. -------- Seriously the coolest restaurant we've been to! They have a unique menu of traditional Mexican foods and snacks. It's a great place to stop for lunch after the pyramids. The prices aren't too crazy for this experience; they're definitely tourist prices though. We booked our seats in advance just in case and if you're going in peak season, I would highly recommend doing the same. The restaurant itself is pretty cool to explore as well, so I would recommend looking around after eating! Note: Visited prior to COVID, so things may be different.

Such a unique and cool dining experience! After a spectacular visit to the pyramids, La Gruta is only 7 minutes of walking distance away. We were so amazed by the setting of this restaurant in this cave with colourful chairs. The staff wears traditional clothing. Starting with drinks, the sangria with vodka is beautifully served and tastes amazing. The sour prickly pear water is refreshing, and the Tempus Dorada is a great artisan Mexican beer. It’s crisp and golden with creamy foam, and has a subtle malt sweetness, perfect for hot weather. Recommended dishes: GOOSEFOOT TOWER FILLED WITH FRESH CHEESE, which is a banana croquette filled with fried beans and soaked in tomato and pasilla sauce; it’s salty and aromatic. We had the WILD MUSHROOM AND SOUR PRICKLY PEAR soup. It’s sour, with the right amount of spicy. PORK BELLY WITH MACHAMANTELES MOLE was rich, juicy and tender, grilled banana, yellow sweet potato and chayote root brought sweetness and freshness of the dish. FIRE-GRILLED FLANK STEAK was smokey and flavourful, with a roasted cactus and onions with seasonal beans, it was earthy, slightly tangy, complemented the meat perfectly. After meal, we were handed a small candle to put inside the cave, which was a great experience! This is a must try if you are visiting the pyramid of sun & moon.

La Gruta is a must-do experience when visiting Teotihuacan. Make sure to reserve in advance. The restaurant is located in a cave right outside of gate 5 of the pyramids. It's a pretty easy walk to get there. The setting is absolutely stunning and you can't help but take pictures as you descend into the cave and dining area. While it is big and busy, the service is still quick and efficient. They have a good system there. The portions are pretty big, so keep that in mind. We got the molcajete, which is chicharron in guacamole, pollo mixiote, stewed chicken, and platos Mexicano, an assorted plate of different Mexican foods. Everything was pretty tasty and we were pleasantly surprised that the food was this good in a touristy restaurant. After you finish the meal, they give you a candle, and iPad to read about their history and myths about the cave. You take the candle to the end of the cave and set it with the other candles as part of the tradition. I thought it was very cool and a great touch for the end of the meal. The bathrooms are located separately and at the top of the cave. Overall, a really memorable experience and meal here. The food is pretty pricey and something to keep in mind if you are trying to stay on a budget but you do get a lot of food for what you are paying for.

The restaurant is located in San Juan Teotihuacan, about 28 miles northeast of Mexico City, and can be accessed through door number 5 of the archaeological site¹². La Gruta has been serving traditional Mexican cuisine since 1906, using local and seasonal ingredients that reflect the pre-Hispanic heritage of the region¹. Some of the dishes that can be enjoyed at La Gruta are fried corn cakes, trio of quesadillas, escamoles (ant larvae), chinicuiles (red maguey caterpillars), tortilla soup, corn soup, wild mushroom and sour prickly pear soup, and salad with quelite greens and caramelized pecans¹. The restaurant also features Mexican folk and pre-Hispanic dance shows on weekends, adding to the cultural and festive atmosphere of the place¹. La Gruta has hosted many distinguished guests over the years, such as Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Jorge Luis Borges, and Queen Elizabeth II¹.
