Restaurante Casa Colibrí — Restaurant in State of Mexico

The location is undeniably great, right on the main square, and the food might be good, though we wouldn’t know. After decades of traveling in Mexico, my favorite country, this was among my worst restaurant experiences. First, a minor note: they don’t have printed menus, only QR codes. So there’s no way to know what they offer or their pricing until you’ve spent 15 minutes trying to connect, scrolling, deciding what to order. At that point, the server shot us down again and again and again. Almost none of their menu was available. It was noon on a Tuesday and pancakes were among the few options. Okay, not having printed menus or almost any actual food is frustrating, but no biggie. We ordered a single tamale, three aguas frescas, and a 100 peso mezcal drink that arrived nearly half empty (see photo). Then, our 5-year-old dropped his limonada, spilling the whole thing and breaking the glass. Kids are kids, so this happens. The last time one of our kids spilled something in a restaurant, the server was extremely gracious, replaced the drink, without charge, and we — as always, were both apologetic and appreciative, followed by a generous tip. I have never in my life been to a restaurant that charges for a broken dish. Ever. When the bill from Casa Colibrí arrived, we couldn’t figure out why four drinks and a single tamale cost $25US ($422 pesos without tip). We came here recently and had a mixed experience. The food itself was quite good everything was tasty, except for one shrimp dish that had way too much vinegar.

The service, unfortunately, was disappointing. We waited about 15 minutes before anyone came, and when the waitress finally arrived she asked if we had already ordered. Starters took another 30 minutes, and they brought them out together with the main dishes without any explanation. It took quite a while to clear the plates, no one asked if we wanted dessert or coffee, and in the end we had to look for someone just to get the check.

We understand the restaurant was full, and we don’t mind waiting, but it would help to be warned about delays or at least have them acknowledged when food is served.

6:14 pm nos dio hambre y fuimos a comer a Casa Colibrí, un restaurante muy bien ubicado y con decoración muy linda, una de las entradas es de color azul con marcos en las ventanas y puerta, se percibe media luz en la planta baja, al entrar tiene mesas de madera con manteles de colores, paredes tonos naranjas y colguijes de artesanías de todo tipo, paredes muy artísticas, subimos a la terraza, mientras vas subiendo de nivel, vas viendo diferentes espacios decorados muy elegantes con faroles, piso de madera y barandal de color negro, paredes con artesanías de la región.

En la parte de la terraza tuvimos una vista hacia la plaza principal y a los cerros encantadores, se aprecian las tejas colo.rojo de las casas dando ese toque de pueblo tranquilo y maravilloso, la música te acompaña en tu recorrido hasta llegar a tu mesa asignada, me encantó.

Menú extenso, comimos platillos simplemente exquisitos, Tlayuda Olmeca y Sopes Prehispánicos de estos últimos son tres piezas, mini sopes de masa azul con frijoles, cecina, chorizo, cebolla morada, queso de rancho y chapulines, de $75 pesos, la Tlayuda Olmeca es una gran tostada de maíz azul con frijoles, quesillo, cecina, aguacate, jitomate y salsa de molcajete $165 pesos, una cerveza artesanal Indajani, porter mexicana, oscura 5.5 grados de alcohol, toques a café, cerveza equilibrada entre lo tostado de la malta y lo amargo de los lúpulos $65 pesos, artur pidió una copa de vino tinto $60 pesos. Total $365 antes de propina.
