Restaurant Kai — Restaurant in Amstelveen

What a great asset for Amstelveen! It's located in a residential area, on the ground floor of a snazzy apartment building. The advantage is that it's easy to park if coming by car, and there is a terrace outside in between buildings (and not on the sidewalk with streets passing by). I had one of the freshest pad thai, reminiscent of my favourite place in Thailand, and favourite Thai resident in the River area of Amsterdam (Kong Kha), I've had since. My husband had a stir-fried duck breast with black mushrooms (Chinese cuisine also uses this one, it's called something with "ears"). The interior is light, tastefully and nicely done, we had a table next to a nice bamboo plant. The wine list is sympathetic, with wines from different regions/countries across a good price spectrum. We had the Kai mix as a starter (really yum crab cakes and super fresh rolls) for two, and dessert: sticky (warm) rice with mango and coconut ice cream - both yum! Service is attentive and welcoming. The restaurant is very modern and comfortable inside but unfortunately the food was disappointing. Good quality ingredients but lacked the depth of flavour you expect from Thai food. Tom Ka soup was flavourful but the green curry lacked heat and the ginger duck contains very little...

The food is just as good as it was in Thailand. The prices are of course a bit higher.

Good service, and quick too.

The fishcakes as starter are recommended. Pad Thai is always a safe choice.
