Gastrobar De Kade in Helmond is one of the best dining experiences I’ve had in the area. De Kade should be so much better than it is. On a relatively quiet Saturday afternoon we popped in for a beer and a snack, as we had a dining event on with friends later the same evening.

The canal side setting is lively and the food is fine IF you want stodge. Lots of oversized portions of chips, bread, cheese, bitterballs and such like but I’m afraid that I always prefer quality over quantity - and the former was somewhat lacking.

What was also lacking was a large beer! What on earth has happened to the world when you order a medium beer and get a 250ml glass? I mean what can a small beer be? And then, when I order a large beer, it’s STILL only 500ml - and it’s 8 euros!

Give me a British pint (568ml) any day of the week, or even better, as they do in Asia, rock up with a 650ml bottle offering - Chang, Lao, Kingfisher, Tsingtao, Singha. Come on de Kade, there’s plenty of options - be braver!

The service was also pretty poor, the place was only a third full on the day, but the staff on duty clearly had their minds elsewhere. Probably dreaming about one day serving their customers a beer in a stein (yes, that’s a full 1000ml or a litre if you prefer) and hey, they’d not have far to go, Germany is after all, a...

Ganz nett eingerichtetes & dekoriertes Lokal, direkt am Kanal, inklusive Außenterrasse. Das Personal war durchweg sehr freundlich, hilfsbereit, bemüht & aufmerksam. Der Zeitraum von Bestellaufgabe des Essens bis hin zum Servieren lag unter 20min. Wir haben das Lokal montags abends spontan gegen 19.30Uhr besucht und haben uns zu zweit drei verschiedene Beilagen geteilt. Von der Menge her waren die 3 Beilagengerichte absolut mehr wie ausreichend und vor allem die Portion Trüffel Pommes war sehr ordentlich dimensioniert, sodass Diese durchaus auch als Hauptgericht zu zählen ist (Preis-Leistungs-Mengen-Verhältnis absolut top!), sodass wir sogar den Rest noch eingepackt bekommen haben für zuhause.

Das von uns bestellte Essen war alles in Allem zwar nichts Außergewöhnliches, jedoch lecker und frisch. Einzig die in Teig gebackenen, fritierten Garnelen waren von der Konsistenz leider wirklich nicht besonders gut, da die Konsistenz sehr 'mehlig', fast matschig war und von der eigentlichen Konsistenz war so ziemlich Nichts mehr vorhanden. Auch der Eigengeschmack der Garnele war durch die doch sehr üppige und geschmacksintensive, allerdings sehr leckere Panade nicht mehr raus zu schmecken, sodass man anstatt der Garnele auch so fast alles Andere in der Panade 'verstecken' hätte können und es als Garnele 'tarnen' hätte können, was wirklich schade ist, da die Kombination aus der leckeren, aber dann dünneren Panade und einer frischen Garnele wirklich sehr gut gewesen wäre und auch super geschmacklich passen würde.

Die 3. Beilage 'Brot inklusive 3 verschiedener Dips und Butter' war auch super, Einzige was es 'zu bemängeln' gibt ist, dass die Butter nicht passend zu den 3 anderen Dips, ebenfalls in dem selben Servierschälchen mit serviert wurde, sondern einfach eine kleine, fertig abgepackte Butter, wie sie in Hotels beim Frühstücksbuffet gerne angeboten wird. Im Endeffekt hier wirklich meckern auf hohem Niveau, allerdings hätte wäre es optisch einfach ansehnlicher und schöner gewesen, wenn alle Dips gleich serviert geworden wären.

Preis-Leistung ist allerdings alles in Allem wirklich in Ordnung, vor allem wenn die direkte Lage am Kanal mit einberechnet wird.

Die Speisekarte ist überschaubar, allerdings muss hier darauf geachtet werden, dass es verschiedene Einteilungen bzw Kategorien gibt und manche Gerichte nur BIS 16Uhr bestellt werden können, Andere NUR nach/ab 16.30Uhr und Wenige auch den gesamten Tag über. Wann welche Kategorie bestellt werden kann, steht in der Speisekarte aber direkt ersichtlich neben der jeweiligen Kategorie mit dabei. Einzig die Anordnung der Kategorien ist nicht sinnvoll nach der Uhrzeit, bis bzw ab wann, welche Kategorie bestellt werden kann, sondern die Kategorien sind wild durcheinander angeordnet, sodass man wirklich etwas genauer bei der Gerichtauswahl darauf...
