Wok van Pejo — Restaurant in Hoorn

We used to eat in this restaurant on a regular basis a couple of years ago. At the time, it was the best Wok/Teppan Yaki restaurant I had ever been to. Unfortunately, the layout of the place is not ideal. To get to the tables, people have to pass the buffet/preparation area where people stand in line waiting for their food being prepared. It is not the right type of restaurant for an intimate or relaxed meal because it is big and quiet noisy. On top of this, they try to cramp as many tables as possible in there. It feels cramped and suffocating. In the past the food was excellent and this made up for the inconvenience. Unfortunately, at our last visit, we were disappointed. The restaurant was busy and quiet noisy as usual. They offer a 2-hour "flatrate" with drinks included which might attract many customers. Service was friendly but chaotic and the girls seemed overwhelmed. One girl took our order, "Aperol Spritz" and water, only to bring the water 10 minutes later and to inform us that they don't serve Aperol. We changed our order to "Campari Orange" and another 10 minutes later, a second girl brought the Campari without the orange juice. Yet another 10 minutes later, a third girl finally brought the orange juice. Fresh orange juice but diluted. When we could finally enjoy our aperif we had already finished our starters...

The restaurant was crowded and the 2 cooks at the wok station and at the hotplate couldn't follow and waiting time was long. There are prepared dishes on the ready-to-eat buffet but these were simply not good and had obviously been under the warming lamp for far too long! Mushy pieces of chicken with thick, pasty sauce, dried out chicken skewers, very unappetizing looking French fries, dried out mozzarella and tomatoes... The buffet used to be better and fresher in the past! On the positive side, I need to mention the sushi/sashimi buffet. It offered a small but tasty variety of freshly prepared sushi and sashimi that not only looked appetizing but also tasted good. The dessert buffet was nice and there was a variety of different options including fresh fruit and 2 chocolate fountains! The restaurant also offered a remarkable selection...

Wokken met een groep. Meestal is dat je beste optie. Vandaag hebben we met onze diverse vriendengroep, bestaande uit mensen uit Friesland, de regio Amsterdam en de provincie Utrecht, na een bezoek aan de mooie Hoornse binnenstad onze keus laten vallen op de Wok Van Pejo.

Bij het arriveren een foutje: de reservering - een week eerder geplaatst en per mail bevestigd gekregen - stond niet te boek. Gelukkig was het snel opgelost omdat er tóch nog wel een tafel vrij was die ons gezelschap kon accomoderen. Aldus geschiedde.

Na een korte introductie werden we losgelaten op het buffet. Er is keuze uit warm buffet, hoofdzakelijk Chinees georiënteerd, een koud buffet en uiteraard de uitgestalde gekoelde ingrediënten om te laten wokken.

Onder het mom “niet mokken lekker wokken” staat er een lange rij bij de enige wokchef. Dan maar aan het warm buffet. Vergeleken met de tegenwoordig steeds vaker voorkomende wereldrestauranten een beperkte keus, maar dat weet je vantevoren. Het eten an sich is prima. De smaak had echter weinig diepgang; de spreekwoordelijke bejaarde oma zou dat zelfs kunnen beamen. Misschien is dit in deze regio gebruikelijk, want ik heb in Hoorn en omgeving nog niet eerder van de Chinese keuken geproefd, maar ons gezelschap was het uniform eens dat hier veel te verbeteren valt. Gelukkig, en dat is dan weer een groot pluspunt, is er Oliehoorn saus beschikbaar voor bij de frietjes, waarmee patat-mayo dan ook gelijk het meest gegeten gerecht werd aan tafel.

Nou ja, dan het dessert buffet eens proberen. Dat is dan weer wél uitstekend. Veel variatie en alles lekker van smaak. Top! Wat ook fijn is is dat het ijs door een medewerker gescoopt wordt. Dan krijg je geen regenboogijs als je één smaak had willen hebben. Top! Wel had de medewerkster die dit deed wat vrolijker mogen zijn. Zoals de rest van het personeel. Want afgezien van deze ene jongedame stuk voor stuk vriendelijke vrolijke mensen. Zo ook de Aziatische dame die de indruk wekte dat zij de chef of eigenaresse is. Nog even leuk mee gepraat. (Het laagje suiker op de door haar gemaakte crème brûlée had dan weer wel iets dikker gemogen, overigens.)

Één ding waar we wel wat ontstemd over waren was de afhandeling van onze (fris-)drank bestellingen. Dat liet byzonder lang op zich wachten, tot meer dan een half uur. Van ellende maar een bak appelmoes gehaald en iemand anders is in het toilet water gaan drinken want het schoot absoluut niet op. Zelfs toen de meeste gasten al weg waren duurde het alsnog een klein halfuur voor er nieuwe drankjes kwamen. En voor de volledigheid, niet dat dit zou mogen uitmaken overigens, hadden wij het arrangement waarbij we drankjes los betalen, dus dit heeft hen ook diverse rondjes omzet gekost. En dan is er nog het vergeten glas, dat nooit meer gekomen is. Dus na een minuut of twintig de fles maar aan de mond gezet, want een uur na de laatste slok drinken was ik klaar met wachten.

Al met al wil ik het restaurant, waar ook echt wel goede dingen waren, niet te laag beoordelen want dat gun ik een hardwerkende ondernemer dan ook weer niet, maar meer dan 3 sterren kan ik er écht niet van maken. Helaas. Een volgende keer in de regio gaan we voor diner maar wat...

The food from the wok, bbq and grill is good. I would not take the sushi. The rice is not that great. Or maybe that was just this once. Sometimes walking back to your table with all the other people in combination with "small" passage ways makes it feel a bit cramped when walking to and from your table. Other then this its great. The seafood and the beef are my favorite. Just make sure you like garlic. There is a lot of it. And i realy love the chocolate fountains. Do recommend it for people that like to eat a lot.
