Hertog Jan op het Water — Restaurant in Uithoorn

Good food, nice staff, great location and an interesting wine menu. That's how they deserve their stars. The price is fair and the interior is cute. There are certainly improvements possible: we had to wait 1 hr 40 for our first course. That's just too long. The 'ratatouille' at the beautifully prepared lamb was practically invisible. The meringue desert contained strawberries, whipped cream, ice cream and 2.5 mini flakes of meringue. Just call it strawberries with whipped cream and expectations will be met better. Drinks are not on the menu and for the wines you have to ask specifically, so you have to figure out what you want to drink, while this could be so much better. There is potentially a good spot here, but finish more than details and add some variety...

We were the only people in this waterfront and very tiny restaurant. The service was really good and they had great ventilation in the kitchen because it was an open-concept one but we never got overwhelmed by the crazy smells. The seafood was so beautifully cooked and the prices weren't cheap, but fitted the ambience and food well. I had the scallops and the whole grilled fish...soooo delicious and juicy and fresh. I heard from my family members that the meat wasn't good though, and very tough and rubbery, but as I was on a pescatarian diet that night, I avoided all mammalian meat. The dessert was all right, nothing to shout about. Five stars go to the scallops and fish, and of course, the wonderful service we enjoyed all through dinner....

Met vrienden bij Hertog Jan op 't Water gegeten; gemengde ervaring. De ontvangst was niet heel erg hartelijk, waarschijnlijk omdat men ons niet kende en er was geen drankenkaart, wat voor zo'n zaak wel gewenst is. Ook stonden er geen prijzen bij de gerechten, wat soms ongemakkelijk kan zijn. Vanwege de warmte stonden de ramen open waardoor sommigen wat op de tocht zaten, zeker later op de avond. Er zijn maar zeven of acht tafels beschikbaar en die waren nagenoeg ook allemaal bezet, waardoor het in de kleine ruimte redelijk rumoerig werd. Door de twee eigenaren Iris en Albert werd er onwaarschijnlijk hard gewerkt om iedereen op tijd te bedienen, maar dat kon niet verhinderen dat er tussen voorgerecht en hoofdgerecht minstens een uur zat, wat geen probleem was omdat wij voldoende gespreksstof aan tafel hadden. Onze tafelgenoot heeft zelf lange horeca-ervaring (niveau Gault-Millaut) en keek regelmatig achterom of het hoofdgerecht er al aankwam. De kwaliteit van het eten was in ieder geval uitstekend en deed zeker recht aan de goede reputatie van deze horecazaak. Men gaf zelf toe dat het deze avond wel erg druk was. Ik zou dan ook niet meer reserveringen aannemen dan voor vier of vijf tafels, zodat de kok het gemakkelijker aan kan en het wat meer relaxed wordt vanuit de keukenbrigade wat ook de sfeer...
