Unfortunately I need to repost my review as I originally reviewed this place after my first visit 6 weeks ago however our second visit this week was not quite the same experience.

The photo attached is from our first visit where we both ordered the big breakfast - it was delicious although reasonably high priced for a breakfast. Everything about the breakfast was worth the price paid as a treat.

Our second visit recently we came back to celebrate a special occasion for breakfast and ordered the same big breakfast, unfortunately didn't take a picture this time as we had taken one last time. So I can't show the difference via photos.

This time, the sourdough bread was tiny/barely existant, the eggs were lacking flavour and the hashbrowns were soggy rather than crispy, part of the portions has also been reduced (shrinkflation perhaps?) so now 1/4 of the plate is taken up with 2 sauce dishes for butter & relish, taking away some of the portion space of the actual food on the plate, yet the price remains the same.

We were surprised with the change in only a few weeks, either this is a result of the new ownership or perhaps the chef was different this day - either way we would not come back and spend $35 each on this breakfast if the change this week is the new norm. This bakery has a great reputation and as such is priced accordingly however the standard should match the price/reputation and both of us (locals too) were left disappointed with our last dine-in visit. May come back in another couple of months to try again to see if it was a permanent change or not, as we would like to continue to come here for a treat now and then.

Coffee is good

Note: as mentioned photo is from our first visit where we were blown away with the food. Will update with second photo if we come back and the standard is...

There was great range of pies written up on the board so I selected the steak, chilli cheese. Turns out this is discontinued and had been replaced with Smoky Brisket, Jalapeno and cheese for I think $NZ8. So I went with that. Rain had set in for the day so I was forced into the car where I sat the pie on the scales on the car seat. It weighed in at 297gms. The biggest pie so far. I thought it may have something to do with the soft seat so with the pie poised on the top of the scales, I attempted to transport it to the hard, level dash. It turns out that my scales are quite slippery. The pie slid off hit the center consul, bounce off my leg, bounced off the brake pedal and landed on the plastic mat. I really struggled to retrieve it time but fortunately made within the 15 second rule. (It is 15 seconds isn’t it?) So the picture here is after its tumble and as you can see, it held together pretty well. You can also see that it cracked the 300gram benchmark. In fact, I found the pastry to be a little bit too think in places. Still to the quality standard of your average Kiwi bakery though. The filling was excellent. Just the right amount of smoky, beef, cheese and jalapenos. It was a very tasty pie and I think would rate with most pie aficionados. 9.5/10 I had a sausage roll as well but it was nothing special. It did taste a little funny. (Might have had some...

Kia Ora! It's very grateful time can sharing a long black together with my lovely Korean teacher & friend. 3 of us very like to enjoy the coffee time in the morning! While traveling, I would like to taste each coffee shop's long black coffee. WHY? It's because one cup of the long black shows the barista whether they have made a cup of good coffee? and the coffee bean and the water itself. I can said this is a hidden spot for traveller passed by. Normally Darfield Bakery is for locals people's spot! If you can to taste such a warm coffee, while you passing by can have a try! it's very warm during the winter time with heather!

Noticed: The coffee that I've taste was last winter time. This is a sharing for my New Zealand Trip. One of the reason which is New Zealand has a pure water itself, so can make a nice coffee. Hope local people can appreciate the water we have. #NewZealand #DarfieldBakery #Coffee #LongBlack #Winter #Iphonephotography...
