Milford Sound Cafe — Restaurant in Fiordland Community

This place is disgusting. If you want a uniquely bad NZ experience, spend your money here.

My wife and I were booked on one of the Milford Sound cruises, and we stopped to get a coffee at this dump at about 9:30am on 29 July 2025.

The staff gave off an air of condensation from the moment we entered, and were overtly passive agressive and dismissive when I asked for some information and ordered our coffees. But it got worse.

First, the woman making my coffee filled my coffee cup to just over half-full, and then proceeded to ask me if I’d like it filled up! Since I had ordered a large flat white, I did in fact want more than half a cup of coffee.

Then, I had to ask for my wife’s coffee to be remade because there was something that looked very much like mucus (a booger to be precise) on the rim of the cup. I stood and watched as they made a new cup. No booger this time - amazing!

I drank the original cup they gave me and came down with a serious throat and chest infection, possibly as a result of ingesting infected mucus (or much worse!). My wife - whose coffee was remade - did not fall ill.

I genuinely believe this dump poses a SERIOUS HEALTH AND SAFETY RISK (certainly as long as the current staff remain there).

Save your money and avoid H&S risks - rather go to the campsite restaurant which...

We arrived around 10:15 am on a Saturday. As our daughter is coeliac, the only option we could go for were hot chips which even that was a risk. We got to the counter to ask if we can order some and got a rude reply from someone that obviously didn’t want to be there that they are not going to be ready for ages. I said we don’t mind waiting, can you let us know when and we will come back. Well, this was far too much for him to do and pretended to go out the back to check and said it will be about an hour away. They came out 5 minutes later. Fantastic customer service.

I used to manage The Blue Duck cafe there and to say I was disappointed was an understatement. He would not be working there very long if I were still in charge.

To top it off, $50 for parking in the old free car park really got my back up. I will never return because of it,...

If there is a zero star I would give it. We ordered lunch dine in here and my parents were just having some bread we brought at the same time. The staff here came with their “manager” so rudely saying we should only eat the food we ordered here and should put the bread away or eat outside, according to their “higher management rules”. Seriously? What kind of rule is that? Have some hospitality when you are in the hospitality industry.
