The best fish and chips...in New Zealand, pretty much!

Situated on the side of the road in a little town called Hampden, there's nothing unusual about the little cottage apart from the banner flapping in the wind proclaiming, "Vanessa's Cafe."

There's a few picnic tables scattered around the front lawn but the magic of small town hospitality is found within the yellow cottage.

You're greeted with an appetising food cabinet and polite, friendly staff happy to take your order. Coffee is delicious and hot, and the "must order" fish and chips is massive and yet will not make you feel as though you've ingested half the oil in the deep fryer with your meal.

Meals are also served promptly and still hot which is a must on a cold, wet day like today.

Prices tend to be on the more expensive side but for what you get, this is definitely worth it.

5 stars, and happy to drop by anytime I'm on...

Wow..this wee place is nothing short of delightful. Popular with a never ending stream of travellers and well to do who have breezed in to experience treats from a wonderfully home made menu from everything to the crunchiest and buttery honey crumpets to absolutely delicious seafood chowder using nearby bluff oysters. The coffee is excellent and expect the barista to bring you your coffee out in the front garden. Beautiful tables set amongst gorgeous flowers and greenery. At the back make sure you visit Rick in his serene and surprising herbery. A lovely selection of all herbs, greens, flowers and veg. Mouth watering. Be sure to ask about the oyster plant! If you love oysters....This darling surprise package I rate...

We went here for lunch we ordered 2 coffees one cappuccino and one soy mocha with 2 plates of Nachos been hungry farmers and 2 creamed muffins costing $52.00. When we received our coffees they tasted burnt moments after that we received our Nachos what can I say the cheese wasn't melted our food was cold asked them to reheat it had next to no mince after asking if it was made with mince had more beans than mince I wouldn't waste my time stopping there staff were arrogant never ever going back there again we didn't even finish it was disgusting didn't even get it to take home for our pooch thumbs down...

After the Boulders we decided to stop for coffee. Vanessa’s cottage has good reviews so we decided to stop... And it was definitely worth it!! We ordered the Coffee walnut slice which was very tasty. I had the Tea - loose leafs lemon & ginger. Big portion (2.5 cups of tea). My friends had long black and short black. The long black is served as a short one and they bring hot water so you can decide how strong you want it! My friends loved it!! The interior is quite funky. Nice staff; Cute garden to chill if you’re not bothered by the traffic passing by.

I read abot the good seafood chowder and paua pie... both no longer on the menu due to cost. Had the salmon cheese quiche instead. And a hot chocolate. Comforting food. Quiche was a tad salty but overall, filling and yummy. I saw many pple ordering the pies, must be nice too. It was sorta crowded at one point, with everyone knowing everyone. Made me smile. :) a very homey vibe. Loved it. Free Street parking. Oh! The cafe sells very unique teapots and kitchen ornaments, salt and pepper shakers. Cool stuff.
