Hands down, the best fish and chips I have ever had.
As an Aussie, I thought I knew great fish and chips until I came to New Zealand. I had already sampled the famous spot in town, which was excellent, and a couple of highly regarded pub versions outside of Queenstown, which were also very good. But nothing prepared me for the absolute gem I stumbled upon one freezing winter’s night: Chur Fish and Chips.
I was staying at the Mercure and couldn’t face heading out into the cold, so I searched for nearby takeaway options. Chur came up, and the reviews looked promising. I placed an online order, was given a 25-minute pickup time, and drove up the hill with modest expectations.
Back in my room, I opened the steaming-hot package and instantly knew this was something special. The fish was encased in a golden, delicate batter so crisp it almost shattered at the touch, revealing fresh, succulent fillets that melted in the mouth. The chips were a masterclass: thick, hand-cut from whole potatoes, fluffy and slightly sweet inside, with a satisfying crunch on the outside.
It was not just dinner, it was an experience. The kind of meal that makes you close your eyes, forget the cold outside, and savour every single bite.
If you are in Queenstown, skip the hype and head straight to Chur. You will leave as I did, convinced you have just had the best fish and chips...

If you’re looking for fish and chips, look no further. We tried this on our first night in Queenstown and ate Churs for 3 out of 4 nights. One was given to Fergburger.
Of special mention is the scallops. This is a must order and one bite of the sweet and succulent scallop will be enough to convince you.
The fish and chips itself is great with generous amounts of chips and the blue cod and hoki breaded fish being fantastic.
I love that they also let you choose to add salt, pepper and vinegar to the dish.
Again, we stayed in kamana and basically bought the food and ate it minutes after it is made. That’s one of the reasons why it tastes absolutely fantastic but I believe it will still be awesome even if it takes a little longer before you can dig...

Ordered: Battered Blue Cod & Chips with Garlic Salt and Crumbed Blue Cod & Chips with Chur Seasoning, and Jalapeno Cheese Bites
Unfortunately both chips don't have the seasoning that we requested, which was a letdown and the chips looked dry and sad - not recommended
However the blue cod in either battered or crumbed tastes fantastic, soft, moist and isn't overcooked, and the batter/crumbs aren't too thick - highly recommended
If they have the option to remove chips and replace it with another fillet or two of the blue cod, that'll be great
The Jalapeno Cheese Bites has the jalapeno taste and flavouring, but it's not cheesy enough in those small bites
The server doesn't seem to be too happy or ecstatic when servicing customers. However instructions were given as clear when ordering on the tablet
Takeaway only, no...
