Indian Taj — Restaurant in Wellington

Walked in at dinner time ready for a feed. Have been here multiple times before but this time we were thoroughly disappointed. The gentleman that served us was very loud and obnoxious with his attempts at humour. We ordered half a tandoori chicken and a curry. While we were eating the curry, I noticed the worker putting something in the microwave for a couple minutes, and was able to identify that it was the tandoori chicken. 3 minutes later, he put it back in for another couple of minutes, after which quickly looked back at us to see if we were watching and then he put the mint sauce on the plate and took it to us. We asked him if the tandoori chicken was fresh and he assured us it was freshly cooked. I challenged him on this and let him know I saw him put it in the microwave, to which he got very loud and started fumbling through excuses. The excuse he chose to go with in the end was that the chicken was cooked in the oven, and then put in the microwave for a couple minutes afterwards? If the chicken was cooked in the oven, it does not need to go in a microwave immediately afterwards. I told him that it was very dry and his answer was that is because it’s not a curry, it’s chicken….. obviously.

The chicken was very clearly frozen and then reheated in the microwave. If they had been open with us about this, I wouldn’t be leaving such a poor review. But the fact that he lied about it and then was condescending to us sealed the deal.

If they’re willing to lie about their cooking methods even after being caught, I can only imagine what other corners they may be cutting.

We had some guests stating over for the weekend and decided we would like an Indian take away meal for dinner. I have had take aways from the Indian Taj before and really enjoyed it so thought I would go back there again. I looked up the online menu and placed my order which would be ready in 30 minutes. When I picked up the order it wasn't what I had ordered. After going over this with the gentleman (not sure who he was) he pointed out I had used the wrong (out of date) menu when ordering. As our guests had special dietary needs I couldn't take what had prepared. However this lovely gentleman said he would remake the order to what I had selected and not charge me for what was my mistake. What a magnificent gesture and exceptional customer service. When I went to pick up my order I offered a tip as some compensation but he would not accept it. You guys are amazing and the meal was up to its usual tasty high standard and enjoyed by all our guests. I will be gong back to Indian Taj again, with the correct menu this time. I don't understand what has happened.

I have been ordering here about once a month for 3 years and apart from one order where it was mild versus the ordered medium everything has been very good.

But last night both orders were poor. Chicken was so sweet. Totally unlike it has ever been before.Korma was also sweet.

I know phone ordering here is difficult because of language difficulties but I was very careful to order by number and checked it twice. Also checked when picking up.

Something has changed. Do you have a new chef? You need to check what is going on because the food has totally changed and was the worse Indian food I have had for a long time.
