We had really high hopes for this place, so keep in mind that this may have painted our impression when those hopes were dashed.
For starters, the food was really quite expensive for: 1) the area, 2) the quantity, and 3) most importantly the quality. In a point that will become increasingly relevant when we move onto the service, we (and the 2 tables adjacent to ours) had to actually ask for the full amount of rice that we ordered, something which seemed to flabbergast our waiter.
It took 25 minutes for the waiter to acknowledge our existence and take our order. 20 minutes later we received our ice cold mango lassi. The satisfying refreshing temperature meant absolutely nothing of course, since our food would not arrive for another absolutely insane 40 minutes. From the time we sat down until we got our food, an hour and a half had passed! The worst part was watching the family at the next table wait so long that they were no longer hungry, flag down the waiter to point out that they didn't get everything they ordered, wait for that to get fixed, eat, pay, and leave BEFORE we had a bite.
And we promised ourselves over and over during the course of this wait that we wouldn't say a word if the food had been worth it, but it just wasn't. Really just middle of the road Indian food. Decently satisfying, a nice break from the usual fare, but none of the spice punch you'd expect.
While we were on the fence between 3 and 2 stars, the hideous mold staring down from the ceiling tiles while we ate ultimately pushed us over the edge. I wouldn't exactly chase people away from here, but I definitely wouldn't recommend it too highly and I surely wouldn't come back before trying some other...
Read moreI'm glad I discovered this place. Unfortunately, in Sarpsborg or Fredrikstad, it's very hard to find a good restaurant serving Indian specialties. At Mother India, both the food, spices, and presentation are very appealing, and above all, delicious. They don't skimp on ingredients or portions. The waitstaff is extremely friendly, cheerful, and smiling - that's an additional plus for this place. The only drawback is charging for water. I visit various restaurants, and if water is not complimentary, the waitstaff usually informs you about it. I found out from the bill. It's a bit disappointing because especially in Østfold, tap water is free and, above all, tasty. And if someone has a preference for mineral water or premium water, they should always have the...
