Zé da Calçada — Restaurant in Amarante

STAY AWAY. Really bad overall experience. It is the first time I couldn't leave a restaurant fast enough. The waiters don't speak a word in English. We used Google Translate to talk to them. One of the waitresses walked away in the middle of taking our order without saying a word, for no apparent reason. When we sat down, the waitress came to the table with bread and water and asked us if we wanted some, without clarifying that it's not complementary (when we asked she said so and then we declined). Overall feeling of a money grab where they ask us if we want stuff and bring them to our table hoping we might flank with our answer. We ended up having soup which was OK ish and leaving as fast as we can. Another couple sat next to us in the restaurant felt the same way. No music at all, smells like floor cleaning solution. Really bad experience, never come back...

A good dinner we got in this Nice restaurant 😎 on 26 /09/2023 . [Coming from Bretagne (Breizh ☝️) in France for a large Road Trip in Portugal , Amarante was our our thirteenth stopover. Great place 🤩 ] we appreciated the dishes, the terrace overlooking the Tãmega river, and the service , not very cheerful but correct and stylish nonetheless. The quality/price ratio was normal, especially when taking, as always, when possible, the half portions, more than enough for big eaters and 30 to 40% cheaper than complete ones .We really enjoyed our choices : I/E for me, bochechas de porco estafadas em vinho tinto + purê de castanhas e repolho branco. For my wife, Bacalhau a zé da calçada that she placed in her top 10 of her list of Bacalhau tasted during our trip. The red wine was OK but no more . This is our “Photo of a Moment” and therefore...

Surprisingly good restaurant. I’ll start with the service, that was something that stood out. The staff professionalism was impeccable, very thoughtful and friendly. The food part was equally amazing. Good quality and generous portions. Good selection of region wines too. And when it was time for dessert the quality was still there. Very very good. All this quality & quantity for good price. The location is perfect, with a beautiful view of the river and the huge church on the other side of the river. If you ever find yourself walking in Amarante looking for a place to have lunch just pass by. Because it’s situated in the old part of the town it’s not so easy to park if you come by car. But most you find parking easily 5min away and like that you get to enjoy the beautiful city...
