Taberna O Nativo — Restaurant in Arcos de Valdevez

Had a fantastic dinner experience. Ordered a chorizo as an appetiser, and it did not disappoint. Not only was it full of flavour, it had very little fat, and it was enormous. While I expected just a few slices, maybe 2-3 per person, only a little taste, we got an entire chorizo, and a pretty big one to boot. As for the main course, as a group of three, two people ordered cachena steak (a portion supposedly was enough for 2 people, but it was definitely enough for 3), and I ordered a cachena burger. Starting with the burger, it had quite a unique flavour, and what a flavour it was! The touch of curry the burger had, coupled with the onions and the wonderful meat, made for an excellent burger unlike anything I had ever had and that I highly recommend. While I did not eat the cachena steak, those who did praised it to hell and back, naming the more subtle flavour of the steak, contrasted with regular beef, as one of the most positive points. To top it all off, the french fries were fantastic and the tomato and onion salad was equally as good, and it came in rather large portion, something I am not used to seeing in Portuguese restaurants. Overall, an excellent meal, with a generous amount of food for a very, very good price. Finally, as a little extra, the space is really cozy, and nicely decorated. We arrived, waited and asked if we could sit at a table outside. The waitress was not particularly welcoming but nodded. We sat. I got up and grabbed a menu myself after a few minutes. We waited like 30min more - no one was coming to take our order. Suddenly an older lady comes out with food for another table. I smiled and asked if we could order. Her response, annoyed face: “you have to wait”; I say: “we have been waiting a bit, for like 30 min” (still with a smile in my face), to which she finally responded with a resignation face “we’re only 2”. I understand it’s high season, and they must be tired - we are OK waiting but to receive such a rude response? Obviously we stood up and left. A friendly family run Taberna that turned out to serve splendid local food at reasonable prices. Take one of the beautiful circular walks in the mountains around the town and then go there for a hearty lunch. My husband ordered the plate of local sausage and ham and when it arrived we were somewhat taken aback by the generosity of the offering, it could have fed four. I had a burger made from delicious local beef with goats cheese and onions, and really excellent potatoes with mountain herbs. We had a fabulous meal outside, in the last of the warm winter sunshine, chatting to the owner (who had lived for 40 years in the States before returning home) and drinking local wine.
