We really wanted to immerse ourselves in the harvest and in wine making. Quinta do Tedo delivered a fantastic experience that we will remember for a lifetime.|Let's start with the moment with contacted them about 9 months ago. Kate, the owner, was incredibly prompt and helpful on her reply. Since the harvest is a moving target, she kept us informed of what we should expect depending on the condition of the grapes during our window of travel (September 13 and 14). We were also given helpful details about what to bring and how to prepare for the day.|Upon our arrival, we were warmly met by Kate and staff members. We changed into our Quinta do Tedo t-shirts and off we went.|We walked the vineyards learning about the different types of grape vines and all about olive trees, we were offered a typical homecooked Portuguese breakfast, and then we were given a great demonstration by Vincent, the owner, on wine making, aging, and blending.|After that, we were invited to foot tread a batch of grapes, which was an incredibly fun and unique experience.|Lunch was served at their beautiful terrace overlooking the Douro River, which we shared with the owners and other 10 or so couples. Afterward, we were guided into "the cave" where we worked on blending our own Tawny.|This experience went well beyond tasting or touring. It was immersive, personal, intimate, unforgettable.|Kate, Vincent and the entire staff of Quinta do Tedo gifted us with their knowledge and passion for wines like we were old friends who had come to visit them. Above all, I loved their sustainability standards and their commitment to protecting the environment. Our energetic and passionate guide, Laura (think Laura Croft - as she introduced herself š) shared the history and wine making processes of this nearly 200-year old, smaller, estate winery. They cultivate 12 hectares of land, mostly with old-vine grapes. Many vines are 70-80 years old, and one section has 110-year old vines.
We tasted two varieties of dry wines and three Ports. The ports were are all very tasty. I didnāt mention before regarding other wineries, but we left this one with four bottles. (I havenāt stopped to count the bottle collection this tripā¦š³)
There is a beautiful little, Michelin-recognized Bistro Terrace on the property. The dinner we enjoyed was among one of the best Iāve had in Portugal. We had two very tasty starters. Dave selected a perfectly-prepared lamb shank with roasted potatoes, special rice, and greens. I almost devoured a pork tenderloin with terrine potatoes on a bed of perfect apple purĆ©e.
Another nice surprise was that Laura, our wine expert also appeared in the service of our meal. Quite a sweet surprise.
