O Pelourinho — Restaurant in Arraiolos

Spent an evening with my wife as there were no other restaurant opened in the town. Diner started relatively nice despite the football game shown on the TV in the middle of restaurant... Food is ok for European standard but our bill ended at €90 for 2 people because they added all the (bad) starters which were brought to our table without us asking. The waiter didn’t speak any English and didn’t explain clearly that “if you touch you pay”!! (Very bad translation shown on his phone) I’ve been in restaurants when they do free appetiser so didn’t think too much of it but it’s a very hard pill to swallow at the end of a meal. When we complained, no “sorry” and any form of apologies from the waiter as he kept on saying he told us which was not true. In any cases I find this type of commercial practices really dishonest from a restaurant. You don’t put food on table that clients didn’t ask for and charge clients if they touch it. How long has the food been around tables also?? Poor...

Oh so sad to write my first negative review ever…and I cannot believe it’s food-related in Portugal where the food is usually exceptional, and the service, even when filled with attitude, lovely and authentic. Not here I’m afraid. 3 plates of appetizers were placed on our table without our request and without consideration of food intolerances. We were also charged for these, and not cheaply. We shared a soup, which usually comes with meat, which we dont eat, so we requested fries instead and told it would be extra so we just asked for soup without anything else. For the 3 appetizers we did not request, the soup (without the meat dish), dry unfresh bread we did not request, two little beers, we were amazed to see a $50 euro bill! In Arraiolos? What? The attached bill doesnt even add up but whatever, I guess that’s what I get for not reading reviews..I gave an extra star because I feel heartless to only give one, and the soup was actually ok! In my opinion this is a bit of classic restaurant and for someone who doesnt know might sound as a tourist trap as all the starters that were given to us were sent back has we didnt want to have them we only asked for cheese and bread, the main dish we picked was the mixed meat for 3 people the owner said that he would add more meat to make for the dish being for 2 people only, the meat was good the chips that came with it had a bit to much of oil on them and the salad we asked for had a lot of olive oil and salt, the cheese itself costs 6.80 as the bread(2.20)was sold separate from the starters so i really dont understand why. My final point is i dont recomend as i believe there better places to go...
