Taberna Belga — Restaurant in Braga

In my opinion, Taberna Belga serves the best francesinha in Portugal, surpassing all others.

There are two locations, Taberna Belga 1 and Taberna Belga 2, situated a short distance apart. Both are owned by the same proprietor and offer the same high-quality francesinha.

The food is exceptional, with both the regular and vegetarian options being incredibly flavorful. I often find myself choosing the vegetarian option, as it has a smooth texture. The sauce is the standout component, thick and spicy with a delightful color.

The francesinha is large, and with the accompanying French fries, it can be a challenge to finish in one sitting. However, you can request a takeout box and bring the remainder home, and the price difference is minimal. Alternatively, you can order a half portion instead of the full one.

Taberna Belga also offers a great selection of beers, mostly from Belgium, but with options from other countries as well.

The staff are friendly and efficient, ensuring that diners are well taken care of.

It's worth noting that the restaurant can be quite loud inside, which might be uncomfortable for some. During the summer, the outdoor seating area opens up, offering a more relaxed atmosphere.

I recommend visiting Taberna Belga before 7:30 pm, as it gets extremely busy, and you may have to wait for a table. On weekdays, it's usually not as crowded, but weekends are always busy, with waiting times ranging from 10 minutes to an hour, depending on the time and size of your group. Despite the potential wait, I believe it is worth it, as the francesinha from Taberna Belga is a true ambassador of Portuguese cuisine.

A Francesinha em geral é boa e esta no mesmo patamar de qualidade de outras francesinhas com o mesmo preço. O bife é bom e está um bocado acima da média, o pão é um pão de forma normal sem nada de especial as carnes frias também são normais, o queijo é bom e acima da média e não quantidade certa, a linguiça é fraca e fatiada demasiado fina para o meu gosto mal se notando ao comer. Em si a francesinha é normal em termos de ingredientes sem nada que a destaque em relação a outras. As batatas fritas são as típicas batatas ultra congeladas, mas podia ser azar meu mas as que me foram servidas eram em geral pequenas demais. Em relação ao molho, este é um molho muito diferente do tradicional, sendo este um molho leve quase cremoso com um sabor Cítrico, doce pouco picante e muito sedoso. O molho inicialmente é muito agradável com uma sensação de frescura e suavidade mas rapidamente se torna muito enjoativo devido a elevada quantidade de manteiga (ou vaqueiro) que este leva. Definitivamente não é um molho para todos e deve desiludir os puristas de um molho tradicional.

Em relação à experiência, decidi jantar aqui numa Quarta feira e a chegada reparei que já existiam pessoas a espera a porta, entrei pedi uma mesa e informar-me de meia hora de espera e assim foi, depois de meia hora foi chamado para a mesa. Depois de fazer o pedido demorou cerca de meia hora para servirem a comida. Tirando todo o tempo de espera o resto da experiência foi muito agradável embora a casa estivesse quase cheia tive espaço suficiente para estar confortavelmente sentado. O ambiente era agradável não sendo barulhento possibilitando uma fácil conversação, a decoração interior com um tema a volta da cerveja. Todo espaço interior tem um aspecto moderno e limpo. O menu é a base de sandes e comidas rápidas com uma razoável variedade de escolha entre sandes, entradas e sobremesas. Em termos de bebidas este dispõe uma elevada selecção de cervejas a disposição.

Veredicto A Taberna Belga é um espaço agradável para se estar em especial para quem aprecia cerveja e para comer algo por um preço razoável. No entanto a elevada afluência de pessoas a este estabelecimento torna qualquer visita numa longa espera, a francesinha é boa mas está longe de ter a qualidade para ser uma das melhores isto sem considerar o molho que é um bocado amar ou odiar. Na minha opinião vale a pena vir cá pelo ambiente e pela cerveja e não...

This is a very famous restaurant for its Francesinha and, for some, one of few competing for the podium. One thing is for sure, it's very, very popular in Minho, as we waited in line with dozens of people for more than 40 minutes - lucky us, they serve craft beers (Kwak!) and the time goes by easier. The Francesinha is good, which, for me, a self-titled Francesinha Expert who lived in Porto for more than 10 years and knows them all, was quite disappointing. Don't get me wrong, it's good and they have Kwak, but it's not the amazing experience you have in other places: the steak is meh and the sauce is too sweet, even if full of chili peppers. Nevertheless, its a great dinner out with friends and Kwak if you're in Braga. 4 stars for that, the Francesinha...
