Churrascaria de São Martinho BBQ restaurant — Restaurant in Funchal

As soon as we walked in we ordered some drinks. Gin & tonic was in fact a vodka tonic. When I asked about the liquor they used they told me that it was a local gin and it just tasted that way..Okay. Next, there was a small explosion in the kitchen which is an open concept and we saw the surprised faces on the staff, happy that nothing worse had happened. THEN, we are invited to go up to 2nd floor in dining room and there was a mix up, some persons were in fact sitting at our table and the staff argued together about who did what... in fact it was embarrassing and a very uncomfortable situation to be in as the other guests had stopped eating and were looking at the commotion...THEN, I can't explain the waiter and his complete lack of understanding of what we wanted to eat! Brought 3 plates of potatoes..none looked like the fried ones we ordered with our steak dinner. Tomato salad was a plate of unseasoned tomatoes, although they were fresh. The cod fish was so salty that you couldn't eat it. Also, let's not forget the amount of bones on our plate after you got some on your fork... All in all, 87 euros flushed down the toilet. Too bad for a restaurant a local brought us to, to have it be such a disappointment. The waiter was confused and rude. Will NEVER go back. I recommend going somewhere else, anywhere would be better than...

Liked this place so much we ate there 3 times during our week stay. They have a translated menu available for those of us that don't speak Portuguese and staff are very friendly. Our waitress 'leesma', was great fun and spoke excellent English and 'Suzy' was very good at understanding our sign language. Food portions are large and very reasonably priced. If I could give zero stars here I would. Our server ignored us even when we tried to order. When we finally did get their attention they were annoyed that we wanted to order. There was no one else in the restaurant. We tried to order egg sandwiches with our coffee but they only brought the coffee and continued to ignore us. Never did get our sandwiches. The coffee was undrinkable. It tasted like rust. We paid for the coffee's and left. Clearly we weren't welcomed here. Avoid this place...
