Our first visit to Restaurante Bar Horizonte occurred on our first night in Madeira. We were tired from the overnight flight plus connections, but soon perked up when our server, Miguel, came to the table with a very warm welcome and proceeded to explain various items on the menu. His recommendations were perfect and the food, including scabbard fish, beef skewers, salads, desserts & drinks, was all beautifully prepared & delicious. When he found out we had just arrived, Miguel generously took time to share his knowledge of best places to visit during our stay. Over the rest of our holiday, we returned several times, always finding the same warm welcome and superb food. One evening, there was a special Fado (traditional Portuguese singing/guitar music) night with traditional foods and what a fantastic experience that was! Although we were the only English speakers in the restaurant, Clotilde took the time to explain the stories behind each song for us, after giving the Portuguese version, which we really appreciated! The music was fantastic and we were also impressed by the young, upcoming fado singer Carolina who has an incredible voice at just 17. By the end of our trip, we felt more like friends than customers as the chef, Beatriz came to know how much we loved her fantastic cooking (evidenced by all the clean plates!) and made sure we knew about her daily specials and recommendations. Marco, the owner, also made us feel very much at home and obviously takes great pride in his establishment which includes the lovely dining room, a balcony that is perfect for enjoying the views with drinks/coffee and a sports bar area. Thank you, Miguel, Beatriz & Marco, for introducing us to wonderful Madeiran cuisine and incredible Madeiran hospitality/friendship! We can't wait to return - Paul,...
Read moreAn interesting concept - the place is split into two areas. One half is a higher priced restaurant, and the other one probably one of the cheapest bars there is in Funchal. The bar has a snack menu with absolutely massive plates. As an example on the bar side you get a huge steak sandwich and fries for less (4.50) than the cover (olive bread for 6.00) in the restaurant. A mojito is 2.50 in the bar.
The view is very nice, the food tastes great and the staff is...
Read moreThere is both a restaurant and a bar. Both serve food. The food in the bar is really great value. We had 2 hamburgers, a beer and a glass of wine for €11.50 at the bar. Really great prices. The restaurant is a bit pricey. There is a stunning view over the city.
Edit: (reduce from 5 to 3 stars) we returned a few days later and were denied to eat in the bar, told we could only get food in the...
