CHURRASQUEIRA O MARCELINO — Restaurant in Lagos

Checked into my Airbnb, and right after that my hungry stomach demanded dinner. I spotted a local restaurant on Google Maps, just a 4-minute walk away, probably the fastest food decision I’ve made in Portugal so far!

The waiter came over and simply said: “We have pork chops and grilled chicken.” I went with the grilled chicken. Then came the follow-ups: “Spicy or normal?” Spicy, of course. “Chips and salad?” Yes, please. And just like that, my order was sorted in under a minute.

About 20 minutes later, the food arrived: juicy grilled chicken, a fresh salad with olive oil and herb dressing, and fries (or chips, as they call them) that were still crispy and hot from the fryer. Simple, no-frills, and absolutely delicious. Pro tip: a whole chicken here is enough for two people and probably weighs around 900 grams. Since they charge by the kilo, keep that in mind when ordering.

The restaurant was buzzing with both locals and tourists. We were lucky to get a table right away; those who arrived a bit later only had to wait about five minutes. Best Piri Piri Chicken place I have found in the Algarve!! House Rose Wine is so so good and the chips and salad pair perfectly with the chicken. I came to this restaurant on its opening day and was not disappointed. It is a simple restaurant with a no frills menu specialising in the barbecue chicken piri piri. The decor is clean and simple to go with their great food. They have lovely desserts (I love the arroz doce - sweet rice pudding) and great Buondi Cafe coffee at just €0.75 cents. Prices are very reasonable and the staff are extremely friendly. It was great that Marcelino himself walked around to ensure that all customers had their food and were enjoying it. l walked away from O Marcelino happy and very satisfied.. I will definitely be coming back...

Restaurant recommandé par notre hôtel qui nous l'avait décrit comme le meilleur poulet piripiri du coin. Nous nous étions également fié aux commentaires élogieux. De notre point de vue l'endroit est surévalué. Nous avons commencé par patienter longuement à l'accueil, plusieurs personnes de l'équipe nous regardaient, voire nous fixaient mais sans nous adresser un mot. Très bizarre.

Nous avons ensuite été installés et nous n'avons pas vraiment choisi ce que nous avons mangé (nous n'avons pas vu de menu, ni de prix, on nous a juste dit : chicken salade chips ?) donc je ne sais pas dire si l'établissement propose autre chose. Nous avons pas mal attendu, y compris nos boissons, car la priorité est donnée au take away. Nous avons découvert les prix à l'addition : poulet, frites, salade pour 2, 2 cocas et pain et Olives = 20.90. Cela m'a semblé assez cher (vs prix locaux) pour la qualité de ce que nous avons mangé mais comme les prix ne sont pas affichés c'est facile. Il s'agissait donc d'un tout petit poulet (cuisses de la taille des pilons de Père Dodu, en plus maigre) , maigre, plein d'os et de morceaux de carcasse à décortiquer. On est loin du poulet fermier que nous avons l'habitude de consommer ou même d'un certain fast-food. C'était bien grillé mais franchement tres "simple" et pas du tout comme on peut s'imaginer le trouver en regardant les recettes de piri piri. Les Frites sont industrielles. Enfin, même si nous avons eu droit à quelques mots sympa en français, nous sommes partis sans notre monnaie (pas grand chose mais pour la forme c'est moyen) : nous avons donné 21euros et le serveur nous a forcé la main sur le pourboire en nous répétant "merci ! Au revoir ! Au revoir !" en débarrassant toute la table pour installer les...
