Atalho de Alvalade, located at Av. Rio de Janeiro 52A, its the new steak House on the block! Great ambiance, nice full bar, good wine choices, gin, cocktails, they have it all. With a twenties industrial retro look, and a huge meat aging boot, for every one to look at, sends the message, we love meat! We ordered the entrecôte and the Brazilian picanha. Each teach includes two sides. The Portobello mushrooms were phenomenal. Nice dressed house salad. Unfortunately, I can't say I was impressed with the entrecôte. More on the dry side, with some toughness that I'm not used to see on this type of meat cut. The picanha was alright, definitely nothing to talk about. Followed with the Douro valley, "papa figos" red wine it was a match! Finished with a dark Chocolate slice of heaven toped with lime ice cream scoop. Kind of saved the evening I must say... The place can get noise. There are butcher tables, families with young noisy kids, a lot of people walking around while you eat. The chairs close to the bar, are not padded, what can make your stay a bit "hard" on your bottom. On the other hand, some chairs close to the open kitchen are padded, and there are two long couches a long the wall, that look more cosy. I think it's a great location, nice decour, great with selection, but unfortunately the main character of this play didn't shine quite well, what kind of detours the visitor to try the more expensive meat cut like the...

Fomos pela carne. Compensou pela carne. Quando chegamos a porta estava fechada (apesar de o restaurante estar aberto) e quando o empregado veio à porta disse-nos "está fechado. Voltem amanhã". Uma piada que poderia ter piada se já nos conhecermos, uma piada sem piada para um primeiro contacto. Entre mais uma ou outra piada sem piada sentaram-nos, entregaram o menu e ficámos a decidir. Fizemos algumas perguntas sobre os pratos e insistiram connosco ir ver o processo todo de preparação. Rejeitámos porque ainda estávamos a ver o menu. Outro funcionário veio mais tarde e insistiu também em mostrar a carne (dizendo insistentemente e com gestos muito largos "anda cá. Não, mas anda cá ver"). Acredito que um atendimento igualmente simpático mas mais low profile seria melhor para o espaço. A volta de cortesia e a despedida também foi demasiado longa. Toda a interação inicial cansou demasiado e roubou demasiado tempo. A carne tinha qualidade suficiente para falar por si só. Quando a carne veio, era realmente boa (já experimentamos outros restaurantes Atalho e a carne estava realmente melhor aqui). As batatas gratinadas são um erro que não voltaria a cometer. As bebidas são nada de especial (mas também não são más). Voltaria pela carne (que não só era de boa qualidade e bem preparada, mas também tem uma boa relação qualidade/preço) O espaço tem mesas grandes e espaçosas que permitem estar à vontade e sofás confortáveis. Tem alguns pormenores engraçados (como o puxador da porta em forma de cutelo, decoração com balanças e pesos antigos, a típica parece de tijolo que faz parte. Tinha também coisas que fizeram menos sentido (como a pintura que, apesar de interessante, não senti enquadrar-se no tema geral). O conceito de uma área mais de talho no fundo é interessante e concordo que devem referir que o cliente PODE escolher a peça que quer. Se o cliente demonstrar interesse podem até fazer um tour mais completo, não acho que devam insistir (e insistiram persistentemente) para o cliente se levantar do lugar onde está acompanhado para ir ver todo o processo. Update 14/9: I did in fact return and had the worst experience of my time in Portugal here. Two major mistakes ruined the dinner: 1) the staff did not know how to make a martini and 2) the steaks were all sold out except for tomahawk, which we ordered. It was terrible quality, not aged enough and full of sinew.

Consistency is key! I won’t be returning a third time or ever again.
