O Ribeiro — Restaurant in Loulé

A well hidden restaurant serving excellent grilled fish and meat. This grill is close to some of the top resorts in Algarve and the football field. The walls are plastered with photos and autographs of famous footballers....if you are into that. I was more interested in the good menu and wine and probably wouldn't recognize a footballer!

I returned here for lunch with a friend and changed the score from 4 to 1. We arrived early (1200) to secure parking. We waited for ages for any attention and the staff looked surprised when we asked for the menu! By then, people had started streaming in and were seated promptly at reserved tables. They were also served promptly from the choices of dishes of the day (none grilled), while we struggled to catch the eye of any of the staff. The food was slow coming, the chicken portion was minuscule, we joked that it was a budgerigar! It was also dry and unseasoned. Chips, rice and salad were ok. This is our favourite restaurant in the Almancil, val do Lobo area. It is basic, but last time we visited 80% of the diners (over 50 people) were Portuguese. The tablecloths are paper, but the atmosphere is “buzzing”. There is a wonderful fish counter and meat counter, from where you can chose your food, from a small fish for 1 to much bigger fish serving 3-4 people. The steak on a stone is always popular. To finish there is a great variety of Portuguese sweets like “Molotov” or Almond tart. Again these can be chosen from the chill cabinet. The web site clearly says the restaurant opens at 6.00. When we arrived a waiter poked his head out if the door and aggressively told us they open at 7.00 and then slammed the door in our faces. We were left without transport , a good distance from anywhere feeling very very upset. If this is how customers are treated in this restaurant I dread to think how the food is treated !
