Atlantico Chinês — Restaurant in Velas

My wife was craving some rice dishes during our vacation and we came across this restaurant. We were skeptical of how authentic the food might taste given difficulty to source the ingredients but we were actually very pleased. I’ve had much better Chinese food back home but I enjoyed the food very much and think it’s quite good especially given the location. The price is also very affordable and cheaper than other places.

55 Beef with bamboo shoots and mushrooms - beef was tender in a somewhat sweet and savory sauce. The bamboo shoots were some of the best I’ve had. The shape was different than at many other Chinese restaurants I’ve been to. The mushrooms were also good and not basic button mushrooms, maybe shiitake?

113 Rice noodles with chicken - I also enjoyed this dish, although the beef was my favorite out of the two. 1 Spring rolls - this was a big disappointment and I would not recommend it. They were nothing like traditional spring rolls (using rice paper sheets), but also just didn’t taste good. It seemed to be more of a pastry dough and was rectangular instead of cylindrical. There also was very little flavor and did not taste any pork even though it was listed as an ingredient. The dipping sauce also wasn’t very good, it tasted like maybe watered down local ketchup (maybe hard to get sweet and sour sauce).

If you get a seat near the window, you have a nice view of the ocean as well since the restaurant is on the 2nd floor.

I am from the USA. I could not believe that I was able to find Chinese food in Sao Jorge. What was even more surprising was how good the food was.

Zunächst haben wir auch überlegt,ob man hier hingehen und essen kann, wegen der Haifischflossensuppe, die als eine der Vorspeisen angeboten wird. Das ist auch aus unserer Sicht verwerflich und sollte in keinem Fall unterstützt werden. Andererseits ist es aber auch so, dass es das Angebot nicht gäbe, wenn es keine Nachfrage gäbe. Das typische Henne-Ei Problem. Nun geht es hier aber um die Bewertung des Essens und des Service und nicht um die moralische Bewertung des Restaurants. Ich empfinde es mindestens auch als vollkommen unfair, einem Restaurant die schlechteste Bewertung zu geben, ohne auch nur einen Fuß über die Schwelle gesetzt zu haben, nur weil man mit der Speisekarte nicht zufrieden ist. Dafür gibt es andere Plattformen. Wir haben uns daher entschieden, das Restaurant trotzdem zu besuchen und wir wurden nicht enttäuscht. Wir haben hier insgesamt 3-mal zu Abend gegessen und es war jedesmal super. Offenbar ein Familienbetrieb, bei dem die Frau serviert und der Mann in der Küche steht. Trotz der Sprachbarriere (sie spricht nur Chinesisch und Portugiesisch und wir nur Deutsch und Englisch) hat die Verständugung prima funktioniert.
