I would have given 5 stars for its decent food and having menu in English for foreign tourists (there are indeed many in the Island), but I am sticking to just one for its extremely RUDE service.
My husband and I went to this cafe twice during our 5-day stay in Olkhon Island. On our first visit, it was about lunch time and there were lots of people. We got some pastries and shashlik, which tasted fine. The server delivered the food to our table and I also saw her doing it for other tables as well. So 2 days later, on our last day in the Island, we decided to go there again for dinner, which turned out to be a BIG mistake. This time, the restaurant was very slow, only three tables occupied including our own. When a server (this time, a guy) called our number, we raised our hand to indicate that it was our food. He delivered it to us, and no problem so far. Then I saw him doing the same thing for another table. However, when our last dish came out, the guy just stared us behind the counter and gestured us to pick it up. I thought it was wierd, but I did anyway, not fully knowing how things worked there.
However, what really made me decided to write this long and detailed review happened after we finished eating: we were about to leave, then the guy SNEERED AT us. (I am assuming for leaving the empty dishes on the table?) Maybe the cafe uses the "self-service" system like a school cafeteria? I don't know. (But from what I saw the other day, I really don't think so.) Either way, he could have told us in a nicer way or gestured or some other way than SNEERING.
If we could have spoken Russian, maybe none of it would have been a trouble. However, I can't stop thinking, after all, Olkhon is a resort town where lots of foreigners come. (The restaurant's having English menu proves its awareness of it and its willingness to serve foreign tourists.) Not speaking Russian, we may look silly/stupid to the locals, but no one in the island treated us like the guy at this cafe. (In fact, most people we met in the island were very kind, patient and accommodating.) I know we can't expect EVERYONE to be nice to us all the time, but it was not an acceptable quality of service of any sort. We want to visit Olkhon again for the winter, but will NEVER go to...
