Edit: Came back again for a team lunch and this time round I also tried the Roast Chicken and Moonlight Horfun. Nothing special about the roast chicken...don't be compelled by the Thumbs-up indication, it's just roast chicken. Moonlight horfun, while not the best, is sufficiently good.
Bustling atmosphere at a very quiet industrial area with mostly tourists, but as a local I can say that the food here is really top tier. They do the classic zichar dishes, but the taste is really better than what you can find in your usual neighbourhood cofeeshops. These were what we got: Fried meesua ($8.80 for small). Portion is unexpectedly big and really filling, enough for 2 pax to share. They also don't skimp on the ingredients, and taste was good too. Fuyong Egg ($10.80 for small). Basically fried egg with sliced veges within (e.g., onions, cabbages, carrots). Pretty standard but was delicious too. Sliced fish soup ($10.80 for small). SO SO GOOD! Their fish soup leans towards the milky side with a strong huadiao wine flavour - damn slurpable! Fresh fish slices too but the star is really the soup. MUST TRY! Cereal prawns ($27.80 for small). 7 pieces of large prawns submerged in cereal bits. Prawns were fresh and had a nice bounce, and the cereal bits lent a nice, sweet crunch to every bite. But felt it was too dry after a few bites and nothing really special about it. Can skip. Three egg spinach ($15.80 for small). Their rendition of the classic chinese dish was surprisingly delicious, with the gravy leaning towards the stickier side. This was excellent. Recommended.
Service was quick and friendly, and some of the staff are able to speak in English to cater to tourists. However, a turn-off was the multitude of birds roaming around the outdoor area, as the disposal bins were placed right beside the tables. Perhaps the location of these bins could be looked into, so that diners would not be so bothered by those pests. Otherwise, great food and still at a largely-affordable price, perfect for gatherings!
Note: Don't forget to make a reservation in advance! We just strolled right to our tables. Don't just walk-in during peak dinner period, you'll have a higher likelihood of being told to wait for...
Read moreNot sure how the good reviews come by. We were very intrigued to try their food, hence made a reservation for a party of 6, even went up to woodlands to bring my mil to come all the way to Alexandra.
First, the reservation screwed up. We made the reservation in person 5 days earlier. Everything was confirmed and we even received the sms confirmation. However, when we arrived, they did not have a record of our reservation. Nevertheless, they gave us our table of choice, at their aircon area. We were hoping this would be just a little hiccup. However, this was the start of a major disappointment.
The waitress who served us looked like she was having pms. When ordering, we asked her if the chilli crab is very spicy, she pointed at the chilli crab and said chilli crab, pointed at the white pepper crab and said white pepper crab. I looked at her, confused, because I could read and that wasn't my question. After a while, she realised my question and said chilli crab is sour sweet whole white pepper crab is more spicy. Ok great, my qn was answered. But as I went on ordering, her face just looked pissed, annoyed, can't be bothered and everything negative. We ordered aiyu jelly, she came back a while later to inform it was out of stock. So I asked for the drinks menu, and she was so sian about it. When the ice water(payable) came, she smacked the cup onto the table. And similar attitude continued throughout. We asked for the tool to crack open the crab, etc, same sian attitude.
About the food, it was lack lustre. Nothing special about it. We ordered yam basket, roasted chicken, chilli crab, Salted egg crab, deer meat and a few others, nothing stood out. Sadded. Mango pudding is one of the worst, do not ever order the mango pudding. It was just those from grocery stores, put into a bowl, added some sago and milk, plus a slice of canned peach/mango? Oh my.....
In any case, I hope the management looks into these areas. If the staff is overworked, pls think of workaround. I don't expect restaurant service but neither do I expect black face having spent 300+. And the food can be improved, pls do not sell mango pudding like that....
Read moreThis was my sixth and final visit to KEK. While the food is tasty, I've found them to be dishonest, which makes me question the hype surrounding them online. I visited for my birthday dinner and ordered the salted egg crab, chili crab, and a few other dishes.
The salted egg crab arrived first, but we noticed it was missing parts—just the middle section, two pincers, and three walking legs, with five legs unaccounted for. We found this odd but continued with our meal. The other dishes were served next, and we were almost finished when the chili crab finally arrived, after prompting the waiter. To our surprise, it also came with just the middle section and two pincers, with no walking legs at all. I wish I had taken a picture, but my hands were too oily to handle my phone.
After realizing eight legs were missing in total, we wondered if this was a deliberate tactic to serve the crabs in this way, as they typically come together. We immediately informed the waitress about the missing legs. She apologized, and when I requested a discount on the bill, she said she couldn’t accommodate that but offered to refry two parts for us instead. When we mentioned the salted egg crab also had missing legs, she raised her voice in frustration and asked, “Why didn’t you say something earlier?” I pointed out the shells on our table, and the lady boss, who walked by, mentioned, “Honestly, sometimes the crab isn’t fresh and the legs drop off.”
We eventually received two additional parts, but they tasted significantly different and seemed less fresh. I was very disappointed. Additionally, the crab prices remain the same as my last visit, and they claim to weigh the crabs, which isn’t the case. I feel cheated and won’t...
