Orchard has no lack of affordable eats! Unlike what the name suggests, New Station Snack Bar does not sell snacks - it’s an old school tze char store that is hidden at the highest level of Far East Plaza. Seatings are always limited and there’s always a queue forming up outside the store. The taste have not changed much since we started visiting many years ago.
We ordered: Stirred fried french beans with Chye Poh (you can request for more Chye Poh) Salted egg pork Thai-style fried beancurd Stirred fried black bean fish with bitter gourd
We requested for more Chye Poh for the stirred fried French beans with Chye Poh, and we were told that it will be more salty. In actual fact, we found that it was more sweet than salty but the fragrance of the chye poh complements the well fried French beans.
Salted egg pork was solid as usual - Pork was adequately fried without being too greasy and it was topped with a generous amount of salted egg sauce that is savoury and not too salty.
Thai-style fried beancurd tastes ordinary, but what is commendable is that the amount of Thai sweet-chilli sauce and vegetables.
We were slightly disappointed by the Stirred fried black bean fish with bitter gourd. The black bean sauce was slightly too salty, and actually we didn’t see a lot of fish slices within the dish. So on that front, we thought it was a bit expensive.
We paid S$58.60 for all the 4 dishes + 3 plates of rice which we thought was relatively affordable given the more expensive options around.
Regardless, New Station Snack Bar is a staple Tze char option if you’re in Orchard area. You will not be...
Read moreA classic eatery that brings back memories of the 90s. The setting is simple with basic tables and chairs, and the focus is on serving good food without any fuss.
We ordered the salted egg pork, green dragon vegetables, seafood hor fun, and hotplate tofu. Every dish was delicious and well-seasoned.
The salted egg gravy stood out with its rich and fragrant aroma. It was creamy and smooth, without any gritty chunks of salted egg, which showed great attention to detail. The pork was cooked perfectly, striking the right balance between tender and crispy. It was not overly oily, and each piece was evenly coated in the flavorful gravy.
The seafood hor fun had a nice eggy fragrance and a good amount of wok hei. Although the noodles were slightly clumped, the strong flavors and seasoning made up for it.
The hotplate tofu was the standout dish for me. The sauce was unique and had an excellent mix of sweetness and savoriness that took the dish to another level.
The green dragon vegetables were fresh and crunchy, with beansprouts adding texture and brown shimeji mushrooms providing a softer contrast. This dish complemented the richer options by offering a light and refreshing balance.
I would recommend this eatery to anyone looking for authentic and delicious local fare. Zichar places like this are great for groups because you can order several dishes to share and enjoy more variety. This spot is highly...
Read more[New Station Snack Bar] Salted Egg Pork ($19 - L) This is their signature dish, and I definitely understand why you got to try it! Really liked the salted egg sauce that's creamy and came with a good flavour, altho it's a tad watery so it doesn't coat the pork as well as I'd have liked. The pork was slightly chewy but still decently soft tho!
Fried baby squid ($16) This was really crispy, and a tzechar dish I started loving ever since chancing upon them long time ago.
Trio Eggs Fried Rice ($12) Recalled it being quite a decent dish, although every other dish was pretty flavourful it took some spotlight away from their fried rice!
Dou miao w/ garlic ($9) Vegetables were fresh and crunchy, and I liked that it was pretty fragrant and flavourful after being stir-fried with garlic!
Marmite chicken ($17) This was slightly sweet (in a good way), and I liked that the chicken bites were pretty soft and tender. Great to pair with rice!
Sliced Fish San Lou hor fun ($7) Oh I really loved the strong wokhei in their horfun!! Noodles texture was also pretty silky and fish was fresh, soft and tender!
Claypot Noodles E-mian chicken ($7) This came bubbling hot in the claypot, and was a decent one too!
It was quite crowded when we went during weekend lunch, so be prepared to queue during peak hours if you're heading down! Mostly were hits, with just some small rooms for improvement here and there 🤭.
Overall...
